Castello Di Gabbiano
You know what struck me first about Castello Di Gabbiano? It’s actually a real castle – not one of those places that just slaps “castello” in the name for marketing. I mean, you’re driving up this winding road through the Chianti hills, and suddenly there it is, perched on its hilltop like something out of a medieval fairy tale. The approach alone is worth the trip, honestly.
The thing about staying here is that you’re technically in Mercatale Val Di Pesa, but you feel completely removed from everything – in the best possible way. I’ve stayed at plenty of Tuscan hotels that claim to be “authentic,” but this place actually delivers on that promise. The rooms are in what used to be the castle’s various wings, so each one feels different. Mine had these massive stone walls (probably three feet thick) that kept everything perfectly cool even in July, and the windows looked out over vineyards that seemed to stretch forever. The silence at night is almost startling if you’re used to city noise – just crickets and the occasional owl.
What really sets this place apart, though, is how they’ve managed to preserve the historical character without making you feel like you’re roughing it. The Wi-Fi actually works (crucial for those of us who can’t completely disconnect), the beds are genuinely comfortable, and the bathrooms have been updated without destroying the medieval vibe. The staff – and this is important – aren’t trying to be your best friend, but they know their stuff. Ask about wine tastings in the area, and they’ll steer you toward smaller vineyards that most tourists never hear about. There’s this little place about ten minutes down the road that the concierge recommended where the owner’s family has been making wine for six generations – absolutely worth the detour.
The restaurant deserves its own mention because, well, when you’re staying somewhere this remote, you’re pretty much committed to eating there at least once. Turns out that’s not a problem at all. They source everything locally (I know, everyone says that, but here you can actually taste the difference), and the wine list focuses on Chianti Classico from neighboring estates. I had this wild boar ragu that I’m still thinking about months later.
Here’s the practical stuff: parking is easy, which isn’t always a given in this part of Tuscany. The nearest real town is Greve in Chianti, about fifteen minutes away, which is perfect for morning coffee runs or picking up supplies. Florence is doable as a day trip – maybe an hour by car – but honestly, you might find yourself not wanting to leave the property. There’s something about sitting on the terrace with a glass of wine, watching the sunset paint the valley golden, that makes checking email feel like a waste of time. The pool area gets busy around mid-afternoon, but early morning swims are pure magic.
Look, if you’re expecting a party scene or lots of activities, this isn’t your place. But if you want to experience what Tuscany actually feels like – not the Instagram version, but the real thing – Castello Di Gabbiano delivers in ways that surprised even me.
