Antico Pastificio
You know what? I almost walked right past Antico Pastificio the first time I was looking for it on Via Dell’arco. The entrance is sort of tucked away, and honestly, that’s part of its charm – it feels like you’re discovering something the tour groups haven’t figured out yet. Once you step inside though, you immediately get why this place has that 8.5 rating. The whole building used to be an actual pasta factory (hence the name), and they’ve done this incredible job of keeping those industrial bones while making it feel genuinely welcoming.
The rooms are what I’d call thoughtfully designed rather than flashy. Mine had these amazing exposed brick walls and original wooden beams that you just can’t fake, but the bed was properly comfortable and the bathroom was spotless – sometimes you worry about these converted spaces, but they really nailed the details here. What really got me was the view from my window looking out over the Chianti hills. I mean, you’re literally in the heart of wine country, and from certain rooms you can see the terraced vineyards stretching toward San Casciano. The staff actually knows the area too, which makes such a difference. When I mentioned wanting to hit some smaller wineries, the woman at reception didn’t just hand me a generic brochure – she drew me a little map showing which back roads to take and which places do tastings without appointments.
Greve in Chianti itself is one of those towns that feels authentically Tuscan without being too precious about it. The main piazza is maybe a three-minute walk from the hotel, and that’s where you’ll find the Saturday market that locals actually shop at, not just tourists buying postcards. Parking can be tricky in the historic center, but the hotel has a small lot behind the building – definitely mention it when you book because spots fill up fast during harvest season. The breakfast room overlooks a little courtyard, and they do this excellent spread of local cheeses and prosciutto alongside the usual pastries. I found myself lingering there longer than planned most mornings, especially when the autumn light was hitting the courtyard just right. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re staying somewhere with real character, not just another boutique hotel that could be anywhere.
