Casanova di Neri Relais
Montalcino, ItalyYou know what really struck me about Casanova di Neri Relais? It’s not just another converted villa in Tuscany – though honestly, there are plenty of those around Montalcino. This place sits up on Località Poderuccio, which sounds fancy but is basically a collection of wine estates and countryside properties that locals actually know about. The drive up via Traversa dei Monti is one of those winding Tuscan roads that makes you grateful for good brakes, but the payoff is worth it.
The thing is, most people visiting Montalcino stick to the main piazza and maybe hit Fortezza for the views, but staying out here puts you right in the middle of actual wine country. I mean, you’re literally surrounded by vineyards – not the tourist-trap kind, but working estates where you can hear tractors in the distance during harvest season. The Casanova di Neri family has been making wine here for decades, and you can actually taste their stuff on-site, which feels more authentic than trudging to another crowded enoteca in town. The rooms have that restored farmhouse vibe without feeling too precious about it – stone walls, wooden beams, but also proper wifi and air conditioning (trust me, you’ll want that in August).
What really sets this place apart is how quiet it gets at night. No tour buses rumbling past at 6 AM, no crowds of day-trippers chatting outside your window. Just crickets and maybe the occasional owl. The staff seems to actually live in the area too, which means they know things like which back roads to take when the main route to Pienza gets clogged with tour groups, or where to find parking in Montalcino during the Jazz Festival. The breakfast spreads are solid – local honey, proper prosciutto, fresh bread from somewhere nearby rather than generic hotel fare. One small thing that bugged me: the check-in process took forever because they’re still doing everything by hand, but honestly, that kind of fits with the whole unhurried countryside experience. The pool area is perfect for afternoon breaks between winery visits, and you can see San Quirico d’Orcia in the distance on clear days. If you’re the type who needs to be walking distance from restaurants and shops, this isn’t your spot – you’ll definitely need a car. But if you want to actually experience what it’s like to wake up in the Tuscan hills, with proper wine literally being made next door, this is exactly the kind of place that makes you understand why people fall in love with this region.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: The rooms has no air conditioning, but is good at night ( we went in May). The rooms don’t have iron and full body mirror.
The pool doesn’t have heating so in May the water was so cold.
What could be improved: Wish they had dinner on the property that wasn’t exceptionally expensive. Finding dinner out was a tad difficult in Montalcino without planning, so dinner at the property would have been nice. Great spot though!
What could be improved: Nothing
The staff is very, very friendly. Thank you for all!
What could be improved: Maybe the hours for check in could be in a larger time slot.
It’s very nice and quiet and a great home base for exploring the surrounding towns and countryside.
We enjoyed a complimentary tasting of their formidable wines in the beautiful tasting room. The views from the property are breathtaking. At breakfast and from the pool area you have a wonderful view of Montalcino and from the rooms you have uninterrupted views of the beautiful Tuscan countryside.
Getting up early to see the sunrise from the bedroom window is so worth it!
Really happy we found this little piece of heaven! 100% recommend staying here!
What could be improved: Water in the shower changed temperature quite a bit and the bed was a little hard but that’s just really complaining on a very high level.
