Borgo Canalicchio Di Sopra Relais
So I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Borgo Canalicchio Di Sopra, I thought my GPS had gotten confused. You’re literally driving through vineyards on this narrow country road about ten minutes outside Montalcino proper, and then suddenly there’s this gorgeous stone villa just sitting there like it’s been waiting for you. The parking situation is actually pretty good (which, if you’ve driven around Tuscany, you know is worth mentioning), and the staff came out to help with bags before I even turned off the engine.
What struck me immediately was how quiet it is out here – I mean, you can hear the wind through the olive trees kind of quiet. The property used to be a working farm, and they’ve kept that authentic feel without making you rough it, you know? My room had these thick stone walls that kept everything cool even in July, and the bathroom had this massive rainfall shower that honestly made me not want to leave. The view from my window was straight out of a postcard – rolling hills covered in vines as far as you could see, with Montalcino’s tower visible in the distance. There’s something about waking up to that every morning that just… well, it changes your whole perspective on what a vacation should feel like.
The restaurant situation here is actually really smart – they focus on local ingredients (I’m talking vegetables from gardens you can literally see from the dining room) and the wine list is heavy on Brunello, which makes sense since you’re surrounded by the vineyards that produce it. The staff knows their stuff too, not in a pretentious way, but like they genuinely want you to try something you’ll remember. I had this wild boar ragu one night that I’m still thinking about months later. The pool area gets busy around 11 AM when day-trippers start arriving for wine tastings, but early morning and late afternoon it’s perfect for just floating around and pretending you live here. One thing to note – if you’re planning to walk into Montalcino for dinner, wear good shoes and bring a flashlight. It’s doable, but the road doesn’t have street lights and those Italian drivers don’t mess around, even on country roads. Most people just call a taxi or drive, which is probably the smarter move anyway. The whole experience feels like staying at a friend’s incredibly well-appointed country house, if your friend happened to have impeccable taste and a serious wine collection.
