B&B Governo dei Nove
You know what really gets me about B&B Governo dei Nove? The name alone tells you everything – it’s tucked away on this narrow cobblestone street that most tourists rush right past on their way to the Duomo. Via dei Gazzani is one of those medieval alleys where you can actually hear your footsteps echo, and honestly, that’s half the charm of staying here. I mean, you’re literally sleeping inside Siena’s history.
The building itself is this gorgeous converted palazzo – and I’m not throwing that word around lightly. When you step through the entrance, there’s this immediate sense of “oh, this is the real deal.” The owners actually live here, which makes all the difference. They’ve managed to restore everything without making it feel like a museum, you know? The breakfast room has these incredible frescoed ceilings that they’ll casually mention date back to the 1300s, like it’s no big deal. And the breakfast – well, let’s just say it’s not your typical continental spread. They source everything locally, which means you’re getting prosciutto from the hills around Siena and pecorino that probably came from sheep you could drive to see in twenty minutes.
What really won me over was how they handle the logistics that can make or break a stay in Siena’s historic center. Parking is always a nightmare in the old town, but they’ve got arrangements with a nearby garage – not fancy, but it works. The rooms are surprisingly quiet considering you’re in the heart of everything; those thick medieval walls actually do their job. I stayed in October when the city was still pretty busy with tourists, but come evening, Via dei Gazzani turns into this peaceful little pocket where you can hear church bells instead of traffic. The Wi-Fi is solid (important for us remote workers), and they’ve somehow managed to fit proper showers into these ancient spaces without destroying the character. Each room is different – some have those tiny windows that look out onto the street, others face the interior courtyard.
Walking to Piazza del Campo takes maybe three minutes, but here’s the thing locals know: you can also reach the Pinacoteca and the quieter parts of the contrade just as easily. The family running the place will point you toward the best enoteca in the neighborhood (not the touristy one everyone finds) and actually knows which days the good markets happen. That 9.4 rating makes perfect sense when you experience how they balance professionalism with genuine warmth – it’s not stuffy, but everything just works the way it should.
