La Torre dei Salterelli
You know what struck me first about La Torre dei Salterelli? The fact that it’s tucked right into this tiny piazza that most tourists walk past without even noticing. I mean, you’re literally steps from the chaos of Santa Maria Novella station, but somehow this little corner feels like Florence’s best-kept secret. The building itself is this gorgeous old tower – and I’m talking genuinely old, not that fake historic stuff some hotels try to pull off. When you walk through those heavy wooden doors, there’s this immediate sense of… well, stepping back in time, but in a good way. The stone floors have that worn-smooth quality that only comes from centuries of use, and honestly, I loved the echo my footsteps made in the entrance hall.
The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid four-star in this part of Florence – nothing groundbreaking, but thoughtfully done. Mine overlooked the piazza (request this if you can), and I actually enjoyed watching the locals cut through in the morning with their espresso and newspapers. The beds are proper comfortable, though the air conditioning can be a bit temperamental during those sweltering August afternoons – just so you know. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night, which is sort of miraculous considering you’re in the heart of the city. The staff genuinely knows their stuff about Florence too, not just the obvious tourist traps. The guy at reception told me about this little wine bar on Via del Moro that I never would have found otherwise.
Location-wise, you’re perfectly positioned without being in the thick of the tourist madness. Via de’ Tornabuoni is a three-minute walk if you’re into serious shopping, and you can easily stroll to the Duomo or Ponte Vecchio – though honestly, early morning or late evening are your best bets to avoid the crowds. The neighborhood has this great mix of actual Florentines going about their business and enough good restaurants that you won’t get stuck eating overpriced tourist food. There’s a fantastic little market on Via dell’Ariento just around the corner where locals actually shop, and the leather vendors there are legit (unlike some of the stuff you’ll find near the major attractions). I mean, it’s not perfect – the elevator is tiny and creaky, and WiFi can be spotty on the upper floors – but there’s something authentic about staying here that you just don’t get at those big chain hotels. It feels like Florence, if that makes sense.
