Benci House
You know what struck me first about Benci House? It’s tucked into this narrow street that feels completely separate from the tourist chaos, but you’re literally a three-minute walk from the Basilica di Santa Croce. I mean, Via dei Benci is one of those Florence streets where locals actually live and work – there’s a tiny alimentari on the corner where the owner remembers your face after two visits, and you’ll hear more Italian than English as you walk to the hotel.
The building itself has that authentic Florentine thing going on without trying too hard. The entrance is understated (honestly, I walked past it twice the first time), but once you’re inside, it feels like someone’s elegant grandmother’s house if she had really good taste and unlimited renovation budget. The rooms have these beautiful terracotta floors that are cool under your feet in summer, and the windows – well, some look out onto the street where you can people-watch over your morning coffee, others face the courtyard which is blissfully quiet. Actually, that’s something worth mentioning: Florence can be noisy, especially around the main attractions, but Benci House sits in this pocket of calm. You’ll hear church bells and the occasional Vespa, but not the constant rumble of tour buses.
What I really appreciate is how they’ve kept the character intact while making everything work properly. The AC actually works (crucial in July), the Wi-Fi doesn’t cut out every five minutes, and the bathrooms have proper water pressure – these might sound like small things, but anyone who’s stayed in a “charming” old building in Italy knows they’re not guaranteed. The breakfast is served in this lovely room with frescoed ceilings, and while it’s not huge, everything’s quality stuff – good coffee, fresh pastries from a local bakery, and they’ll make you eggs if you ask nicely. The staff genuinely seems to enjoy helping too, which isn’t always the case at four-star places. They gave me perfect directions to this little wine bar on Via de’ Neri that I never would have found otherwise.
Location-wise, you’re in the Santa Croce neighborhood, which I think is the sweet spot for staying in Florence. Close enough to walk everywhere that matters – the Duomo’s maybe ten minutes, the Uffizi’s fifteen if you don’t get lost in the medieval streets (which you will, but that’s half the fun). But you’re also near some of the city’s best restaurants that tourists often miss. There’s this incredible trattoria called Cibrèo just around the corner that doesn’t even have a sign. Plus, if you need a break from Renaissance overload, the Sant’Ambrogio market is right there – it’s where actual Florentines shop for groceries and it’s fascinating to wander through.
Honestly, with an 8.9 rating, Benci House delivers exactly what you’d hope for in Florence: authentic character, modern comfort, and a location that makes you feel like you’re living in the city rather than just passing through it.
