Podere I Sorbi, Spacious Tuscan Villa, Lajatico, Nr Pisa
You know those places that make you immediately text your friends “I found it”? That’s exactly what happened when I pulled up to Podere I Sorbi. This isn’t just another rental property – it’s an actual working farm estate tucked into the hills around Lajatico, and honestly, the photos don’t do it justice. The villa sits on this gorgeous piece of Tuscan countryside where you can actually see the medieval towers of Volterra on clear days (which, let’s be real, is most days here).
The space itself is properly spacious – I mean, you could have two families here without anyone feeling cramped. What struck me most was how it manages to feel both rustic and refined. The stone walls are the real deal, probably centuries old, but someone’s clearly put thought into making it actually livable. The kitchen has everything you need if you’re planning to cook with those incredible tomatoes from the Saturday market in Lajatico (about a 10-minute drive down winding roads that honestly become part of the charm). Speaking of driving, you’ll definitely want a car here – this isn’t a walk-to-everything situation, but that’s kind of the point. The isolation is what makes mornings so magical, with nothing but bird songs and the occasional distant tractor.
What really sets this place apart is the location knowledge you get from staying here. The owners – or maybe it was the property manager, I can’t remember – left this hand-drawn map showing the best route to Teatro del Silenzio, Andrea Bocelli’s outdoor concert venue. Turns out it’s practically next door, which explains why this area gets booked solid during concert season. But here’s what guidebooks won’t tell you: even without a concert, that amphitheater area is stunning for sunset walks. The whole zone around here has this almost spiritual quiet that makes you understand why they call it the “Theater of Silence.” I spent most evenings just sitting on the villa’s terrace with a glass of wine, watching the light change across the valley. The Wi-Fi works fine if you need to work, but honestly, you probably won’t want to. Fair warning though – if you’re coming in summer, it gets properly hot during midday hours, so plan your exploring for early morning or late afternoon. The thick stone walls keep the villa cool, but you’ll appreciate having that pool when you get back from wandering around nearby San Gimignano or Volterra.
