B&B La Marmora 39
Florence, ItalyYou know what? I almost walked right past B&B La Marmora 39 the first time I was looking for it – which honestly turned out to be a good sign. It’s tucked into this quiet residential street in San Marco, and I mean actually quiet, not the fake “peaceful oasis” kind of quiet you read about in hotel descriptions. The building itself has that worn Florentine charm where the stone looks like it’s been holding stories for centuries, and the entrance is understated enough that you feel like you’re staying at someone’s well-appointed home rather than a tourist trap.
The location is pretty brilliant if you know Florence at all. Via Alfonso la Marmora isn’t one of those streets tourists stumble down by accident, but you’re literally a ten-minute walk from the Duomo and maybe fifteen from Ponte Vecchio. What I loved though was that you can actually walk to the Basilica of Santa Croce in about five minutes – most people don’t realize it’s right there, and it’s honestly one of the most stunning churches in the city without the insane crowds of the main cathedral. There’s this little alimentari around the corner where the owner, Giuseppe, will slice you the best mortadella you’ve ever had, and in the evenings the neighborhood has this authentic residential vibe where you hear actual Florentine families going about their business instead of tour groups.
The rooms themselves feel like someone’s stylish Italian grandmother decorated them – and I mean that in the best possible way. Everything’s clean and thoughtfully put together, with these beautiful tile floors that stay cool even in summer and windows that actually open properly (you’d be surprised how rare that is). The breakfast situation is solid – fresh pastries, good coffee, and they don’t make you feel rushed even if you wander down at 9:30. Check-in was refreshingly normal; no fake enthusiasm, just helpful people who clearly know the city and can point you toward things you might not find otherwise. I will say the stairs are real Italian stairs, so if you’re traveling with heavy luggage, maybe pack light or embrace the arm workout. The whole place has this lived-in elegance that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something special without trying too hard to be special, if that makes sense. With that 8.9 rating, they’re obviously doing something right – and after staying there, I get it.

Youssef was also a highlight—he was incredibly kind and helpful, especially when we needed assistance with parking and arranging an earlier breakfast.
What could be improved: The price was slightly higher, but I think it was worth it.
