Badia a Coltibuono Wine Resort
Gaiole in Chianti, ItalyYou know those places that make you wonder if you’ve accidentally stumbled into someone’s impossibly perfect Tuscan dream? That’s exactly what happened when I first drove up the cypress-lined road to Badia a Coltibuono. This isn’t just another wine resort – it’s actually a converted 11th-century abbey that sits right in the heart of Chianti Classico territory, about 20 minutes from Radda in Chianti if you’re coming from that direction. The GPS gets a bit confused on the final approach (honestly, most do around here), but just follow the signs for “Badia” and you’ll wind through these gorgeous rolling hills covered in Sangiovese vines until you reach what feels like a medieval film set.
The thing that struck me immediately was how lived-in everything feels. I mean, this place has been in the Stucchi Prinetti family for generations, and they’ve managed to turn their ancestral home into a hotel without losing that authentic, slightly worn-around-the-edges charm that makes Italian country properties so special. The rooms are spread across different buildings throughout the property – some in the main abbey structure, others in converted outbuildings – and each one feels completely unique. Mine had these massive stone walls (perfect for keeping cool during those sweltering July afternoons) and windows that looked out over the vineyards toward Siena in the distance. The Wi-Fi actually works well, which isn’t always a given in these historic properties, and there’s plenty of parking right on-site, though you’ll want to reserve a spot during harvest season in September.
What really sets this place apart is the wine situation – and I don’t just mean they have a good selection. The Coltibuono estate produces some seriously respected Chianti Classico, and you can literally walk from your room to the cellars for tastings. The restaurant sources most ingredients from their own gardens and local producers within a few kilometers, which sounds like marketing speak until you taste their ribollita made with vegetables picked that morning. Service moves at that wonderfully unhurried Tuscan pace (don’t expect New York-level efficiency), but the staff genuinely knows the area and can point you toward hidden gems like the weekly market in Gaiole or the best hiking trails through the Chianti hills. September through October gets pretty busy with the harvest crowds and leaf-peepers, but visit in late spring or early summer and you’ll have those sunset vineyard walks pretty much to yourself. It’s the kind of place where you plan to stay two nights and end up extending to four because, honestly, why would you want to leave?

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: Just that we couldn’t stay longer!
What could be improved: Nothing
What could be improved: I would be nice to have: more options to eat, maybe another restaurant or like a little snack shop; some services at the pool (towels there so that guests don't have to bring them); more activities in the hotel
What could be improved: One thing to note is that the pool wasn't in operation during our stay, but we were okay with it given the hotel's other great qualities.
What could be improved: Nothing
What could be improved: The shower and the bed.
What could be improved: We had an electric vehicle and the on-site charger was out of service - worth checking if you're in same position. There are other options in nearby towns / en-route so easy to solve.
It's a great place to walk around and having a diner at there restaurant. We had the tasting menu with combining wines from there own vineyard. Really delicious. Also the staff is very sweet.
Cooking class was fun and the result was delicious.
