Antico Casale Rodilosso
Montaione, ItalyYou know what really struck me about Antico Casale Rodilosso? The silence. I mean, you’re out here in loc. Rodilosso – which honestly sounds more dramatic than it is, it’s just this tiny hamlet outside Montaione – and when you step out of your car, there’s this incredible quiet that city folks like me forget exists. The old stone farmhouse sits on Via Pozzolo like it’s been waiting there forever, which it probably has, and you immediately get why someone thought to turn this into a hotel.
The whole place has that lived-in feel that a lot of converted agriturismos try for but don’t quite nail. The rooms actually feel like rooms, not hotel boxes, if that makes sense. Mine had these thick walls that kept everything cool even in July, and honestly, the bed was better than what I’ve got at home. The bathroom was modern enough without feeling out of place – you know how some places go overboard trying to preserve “character” and you end up with a shower that barely works? Not here. What really got me was breakfast on the terrace, looking out over the Tuscan hills with my coffee. There’s something about the morning light hitting those cypress trees that makes you understand why people move to Italy and never leave.
The staff here actually knows the area – and I mean beyond just pointing you toward San Gimignano like every other place does. The woman at the front desk (wish I’d caught her name) told me about this little enoteca in Montaione that doesn’t even have a sign, just locals drinking wine at plastic tables. She was right, of course. Getting around is easy enough if you’ve got a car, which you definitely need out here. Montaione proper is maybe ten minutes away, and you can hit Florence in under an hour if you’re feeling ambitious. The parking situation is refreshingly simple – just pull up and you’re done, no valet drama or hunting for spots. I’d say the only real downside is that it’s quiet to the point where you might actually get restless if you’re used to constant stimulation, but honestly, that forced slowdown is probably exactly what most of us need. The 8.8 rating makes total sense once you’ve been there – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in Tuscany, just a really well-run spot where you can actually relax and remember why you wanted to visit Italy in the first place.
