Agriturismo Schiaccia Ghiande
Massa Marittima, ItalyYou know what? I’ve stayed at a lot of agriturismos in Tuscany, but Agriturismo Schiaccia Ghiande genuinely surprised me. First off, the name literally means “acorn crusher” in Italian – which honestly made me chuckle when I first saw it, but it actually makes perfect sense once you’re there. The place sits on these scattered farmlands (poderi sparsi, as they call them) about 28 kilometers from Massa Marittima, and I mean truly scattered – you’ll wind through olive groves and past stone walls that look like they’ve been there since the Etruscans.
The drive up there is half the experience, actually. You’re climbing through this wild, rolling countryside where the GPS sort of gives up and you just follow the little wooden signs. But once you arrive… well, it’s one of those places that makes you understand why people fall in love with rural Italy. The buildings have that weathered stone look that’s impossible to fake, and the owners – this lovely family who’ve been working the land for generations – they just get it. They’re not trying to be fancy; they’re just really good at what they do. The rooms are comfortable without being precious about it, and honestly, the silence at night is incredible. I mean, coming from the city, you forget how dark and quiet the world can actually be.
What really sets this place apart is how they handle the agriturismo concept. They’re not just playing at being farmers – they actually produce their own olive oil and wine, and you can taste the difference. Breakfast includes stuff from their garden, and I’m talking about tomatoes that actually taste like tomatoes, you know? The location puts you right in the sweet spot between the coast and the hills – you can hit the beaches around Follonica in about 30 minutes, or explore the medieval streets of Massa Marittima when you want that classic Tuscan town experience. But honestly, some of my best memories were just sitting on their terrace with a glass of their Sangiovese, watching the sun set over the Maremma countryside. The whole area feels like a secret that hasn’t been completely discovered yet, which is saying something in Tuscany. If you’re looking for that authentic Italian countryside experience without the tourist crowds of Chianti or Val d’Orcia, this is your spot.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: Nothing, all perfect.
What could be improved: Hatte bei uns viele Mücken - Mückenspray mitnehmen ist zu empfehlen
What could be improved: L’adresse figurant sur le site Booking est erronée.
Une cuisine extérieure très agréable !
Lieu paisible pour se ressourcer.
What could be improved: Dommage qu’il n’y ait pas une table d’hôte pour le dîner.
Nos hôtes sont très gentils et serviables.
Marvelous and well restored house.
Remote and rural feel with the last private mile.
Good matrasses..
What could be improved: Nothing major, but if anything:
Kids missed a pool.
Many mosquitos, wasps and bees.
Aircon wasn't sufficient for the appt under the roof. Couldn't get the temperature under 29 inside.
What could be improved: Tutto perfetto.
The apartment was fully equipped (apart from the typical, very rich tableware and pots, there was a very helpful toaster and a special grater for vegetables, storage containers and even a water bottle). A beautifully landscaped large area around the house, a well-equipped summer kitchen in the garden - a stove plus a large gas-coal grill, a sink and a set of pots, pans and all tableware. Thanks to this, when eating in the garden, there is no need to bring plates and cutlery from the apartment. Plenty of places to spend time in the garden. There is a bar on site (fees are charged during the use and settled upon departure) as well as the possibility of buying olive oil, wines or preserves. A great treat for mountain bikers, the possibility of buying training with the host - a titled mountain biking competitor. It is worth knowing that the last few hundred meters lead up a gravel road to the house, but it is not a problem for a skilled driver.
What could be improved: nothing, everything was amazing
