Agriturismo Podere l’Aione
You know what? I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to Agriturismo Podere l’Aione – honestly, finding it tucked away in the hills outside Scansano felt like stumbling onto something locals had been keeping secret. The gravel road winds through olive groves and vineyards, and when you finally arrive, there’s this immediate sense of… well, peace, I guess. It’s the kind of place where you actually hear silence, if that makes sense – just the occasional rustle of leaves and maybe some distant church bells from the village below.
The property itself is beautifully restored Tuscan farmhouse architecture, but what really got me was how they’ve managed to keep it feeling authentic rather than overly polished. The owners – and I mean this in the best way – clearly live here and love what they do. Check-in was refreshingly relaxed, more like being welcomed into someone’s home than a formal hotel process. The rooms have that perfect balance of rustic charm and modern comfort – exposed beams, local ceramics, but thankfully excellent Wi-Fi and air conditioning (trust me, you’ll want both during summer). I stayed in one of the ground-floor rooms that opens directly onto the garden, and honestly, I spent most evenings just sitting on the little terrace with a glass of their house wine, watching the sunset paint the Maremma countryside in these incredible golden hues.
What sets this place apart – and I mean really sets it apart – is the food situation. They serve dinner on request using ingredients from their own garden and local producers, and it’s the kind of meal that makes you understand why people get emotional about Italian cuisine. The breakfast spread features their own olive oil, honey from beehives on the property, and fresh bread that arrives warm each morning. Location-wise, you’re about a 15-minute drive from Scansano town center (there’s a great little enoteca on Via Garibaldi if you want to stock up on local Morellino wine), and maybe 30 minutes to some lesser-known beaches along the coast that are absolutely worth the trip. The thermal springs at Saturnia are close enough for a day trip too, though honestly, I found it hard to leave the property – there’s something addictive about the rhythm of this place. Fair warning though: you’ll need a car, and the final stretch of road can be a bit challenging at night, but the payoff is worth it. This is where you come when you want to experience real Tuscany, not the tour-bus version.
