Agriturismo Bio Podere 109 – Wine&Food
Grosseto, ItalyYou know, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first turned down Strada Banditella – it’s honestly one of those narrow country roads that makes you wonder if your GPS is having a laugh. But then you see the gates of Podere 109, and suddenly it all makes sense. This place sits in the heart of Maremma, about twenty minutes from Grosseto, where the rolling hills are dotted with those perfect Tuscan farmhouses you see on postcards, except this one’s actually real and you can sleep in it.
The moment you pull up (plenty of parking, thank god, because navigating those country roads with a rental car is adventure enough), you’re hit with that intoxicating mix of lavender, herbs, and something earthy that I can only describe as “proper countryside.” The main building is this beautifully restored stone farmhouse that feels like it’s been here forever – which it probably has – but everything inside is thoughtfully modern without losing that authentic agriturismo charm. I mean, they’ve managed to keep the old wooden beams and terracotta floors while adding things like proper shower pressure and WiFi that actually works, which honestly can be hit or miss in rural Tuscany.
What really sets this place apart is how seriously they take the whole “bio” part of their name. The family runs organic vineyards right on the property, and their wine isn’t just some tourist novelty – it’s legitimately good stuff that you’d be happy to drink anywhere. During harvest season (late September if you’re planning ahead), you can actually join in, though fair warning: it’s real work, not just Instagram-worthy grape stomping. The food situation is incredible too. Breakfast includes their own olive oil, fresh eggs from chickens that wander around the property, and bread that’s still warm when they bring it out. Dinner, when they offer it, features vegetables from their garden and – this is key – they actually know how to cook them properly, not just throw some sad tomatoes on a plate and call it “farm fresh.”
The rooms themselves are spacious and cool even in summer, with those thick stone walls doing their job. I stayed in one of the ground floor rooms that opens right onto the vineyards – you can literally roll out of bed and be among the vines in thirty seconds. The beds are proper comfortable, and the bathrooms are surprisingly luxurious for a working farm. Only small complaint? The walls are thick but not soundproof, so if you’re a light sleeper, you might hear your neighbors chatting on their terrace in the evening.
Location-wise, you’re perfectly positioned for exploring this part of Tuscany that most tourists miss. Alberese is right there for provisions, and if you’re feeling adventurous, the wild beaches of Maremma Natural Park are just a twenty-minute drive through some genuinely stunning countryside. The owners – who speak excellent English, by the way – are full of recommendations that go way beyond the usual tourist spots. They pointed me toward this tiny vineyard near Scansano that I never would have found otherwise, and a restaurant in Talamone with the best seafood I had in Italy.
Honestly, this is what agriturismo should be but often isn’t – authentically agricultural, genuinely hospitable, and comfortable enough that you want to extend your stay. Just don’t expect to rush around seeing ten cities in three days. This place makes you want to slow down and actually experience Tuscany instead of just checking it off a list.
