Villa Scorzi – Relais de Charme
You know what? I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Tuscany, but Villa Scorzi caught me completely off guard. It’s tucked away on Via Lungomonte Pisano in Calci – and honestly, most people blow right past this little town on their way to Pisa without realizing what they’re missing. The villa sits there like some elegant secret, this perfectly restored 18th-century estate that somehow manages to feel both grand and intimate at the same time. When I pulled up (parking’s actually really easy, which is a miracle in this part of Italy), I could immediately smell the lavender from their gardens mixing with that distinctive Tuscan cypress scent. The staff greeted me like I was visiting family – not the overly polished hotel routine, but genuine warmth that made the whole check-in process feel more like arriving at a friend’s country house.
What really gets me about this place is how they’ve nailed that balance between historic charm and modern comfort. The rooms have these gorgeous original frescoes and antique furniture, but the beds are seriously comfortable and the bathrooms are updated without looking jarring. I mean, you’re sleeping in what feels like a Renaissance painting, but you can actually get decent water pressure in the shower – trust me, that’s not always a given in these old Italian properties. The restaurant serves this incredible regional cuisine using herbs from their own garden, and the sommelier (who’s clearly passionate about local wines) introduced me to some Chianti Classico from vineyards just down the road that I’d never heard of. Honestly, some of the best meals I’ve had in Italy have been right there on their terrace, watching the sun set over the Pisan hills while picking at their antipasti selection.
Here’s the thing about Calci – it’s perfectly positioned if you actually want to experience Tuscany instead of just Instagram it. You’re twenty minutes from Pisa (avoiding all that tourist chaos), but you’re also close enough to San Miniato for truffle season and an easy drive to Volterra if you want to explore those medieval hilltop towns. The villa’s concierge – this lovely woman named Francesca – knows every back road and family-run winery in the area, plus she’ll book you cooking classes with local nonnas that you’d never find on your own. Villa Scorzi consistently gets rated around 9.1 by guests, and after spending a long weekend there, I totally get why. It’s not trying to be flashy or trendy – it’s just authentically, beautifully Tuscan in a way that feels effortless. The kind of place where you find yourself lingering over morning coffee way longer than planned, listening to the church bells from the village center and wondering why you ever thought you needed to rush through Italy.
