Residenza Maglioni al Bargello
You know what struck me first about Residenza Maglioni al Bargello? It’s tucked into this gorgeous stretch of Via Ghibellina where you can actually hear the church bells from Santa Croce in the morning – but honestly, they’re not annoying, more like a gentle Florence wake-up call. The building itself has that weathered Florentine stone facade that makes you feel like you’re staying in someone’s ancestral palazzo, which I guess in a way you are.
The thing about this place is it gets the balance right between being genuinely historic and actually comfortable. I mean, you’re literally a three-minute walk from the Bargello Museum (hence the name), and the Uffizi is so close you could practically roll out of bed and be looking at Botticelli within ten minutes. But here’s what the guidebooks don’t tell you – Via Ghibellina is one of those streets where locals actually live and shop, so you’ve got the little alimentari and that amazing panetteria just down the block where construction workers grab their morning cornetti. It feels real, not like a tourist bubble.
The rooms have this lovely worn elegance – think original terracotta floors that creak just slightly underfoot and windows that frame actual slices of Florence life. Some rooms look out onto the street (you’ll hear the occasional Vespa, but it’s not bad), while others face the inner courtyard where it’s dead quiet. The bathrooms are updated but not in that sterile, chain-hotel way – they kept some of the original tile work, which I actually loved. WiFi works perfectly, by the way, and there’s decent air conditioning, which trust me, you’ll appreciate in July.
What really won me over was the staff’s approach – they’re not hovering, but they clearly know their city inside and out. The woman at reception gave me this route to avoid the crowds walking to Ponte Vecchio that I never would have figured out myself, cutting through these tiny side streets that felt like a secret passage. And when I mentioned wanting good gelato that wasn’t touristy, she pointed me toward this spot on Via de’ Neri that locals actually frequent.
The breakfast setup is simple but thoughtful – proper espresso, fresh pastries from somewhere nearby (not the sad hotel buffet stuff), and they’ll actually make you a decent cappuccino after 11am without giving you the stink eye. There’s this little sitting area with newspapers and guidebooks where you can plan your day without feeling rushed.
I’ll be honest, it’s not luxury in the marble-lobby sense, but it’s something better – it’s authentic Florence without the discomfort. The location alone is worth it (seriously, you can walk to basically everything), but there’s also this feeling that you’re experiencing the city the way it’s meant to be experienced, from a base that feels connected to the neighborhood rather than dropped into it. For a 4-star place with an 8.9 rating, it delivers exactly what those numbers suggest – solid, charming, and genuinely Florentine.

Small but fantastic
Perfect location
As is typical in Florence the unit was tiny. We could only open one suitcase at a time and had to lay it on bed to do so. It was adequate for a two night stay. Good communication. It was difficult to adjust the hvac without making the temp too cold or too warm. Bed comfortable. No breakfast included.
They did housekeeping daily and were very helpful throughout the stay. The location is amazing and I would definitely go back.
Hotel staff was very courteous. Someone is sent to greet you at check-in to show you the room and amenities. They are otherwise available via WhatsApp for any questions. They were able to arrange taxi pickup service on my checkout day.
My room was interior-facing, overlooking a terrace area. A small balcony with a chair added a charming touch. A bus stop was a few feet away.
