Villa Le Querciolaie
Monteverdi Marittimo, ItalySo I stumbled across Villa Le Querciolaie completely by accident – well, sort of. I was driving through Monteverdi Marittimo trying to find this tiny medieval village everyone raves about, and honestly, I almost missed the turnoff to the hotel. It’s tucked away on Via Castagnetana, which sounds fancy but is actually just this winding country road that makes you wonder if your GPS is having a breakdown. But here’s the thing – that’s exactly what makes it perfect.
The moment you pull up, you get why they call it “Le Querciolaie” (the oak groves, for those whose Italian is as rusty as mine was). The place is literally surrounded by these massive oak trees that have probably been there longer than most Italian cities. I mean, you’re in proper Tuscan countryside here – the kind where you can actually hear birds instead of traffic, and the air smells like wild herbs and that particular earthiness that only comes from ancient soil. The building itself has that weathered stone look that screams authenticity without trying too hard. You know what I mean? It’s not one of those places that was built last year to look “rustic.”
What really got me was how the staff treated the place like it was their own home. The woman at reception (I think her name was Francesca?) knew exactly which room had the best sunset view and actually walked me there to show me instead of just handing over a key card. The rooms themselves are spacious in that old-Italian-villa way – thick walls, cool tile floors, and windows that open properly, not those sealed hotel things. Fair warning though: if you’re expecting ultra-modern everything, this might not be your speed. But honestly, when you’re looking out at rolling hills that stretch to the Mediterranean, you’re not really worried about whether the bathroom has heated floors.
The location is brilliant if you want to explore the real Tuscany without fighting crowds. Monteverdi Marittimo is maybe a five-minute drive away, and it’s one of those hilltop villages where you can park (miracle!), grab a coffee, and wander cobblestone streets without dodging tour buses. Plus, you’re actually closer to some lesser-known gems than you’d be staying in the obvious places. The thermal baths at Venturina are about twenty minutes away, and the coast – proper Mediterranean beaches, not tourist traps – is maybe a half-hour drive.
I’ll be honest, the pool area was my weakness. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s positioned so you’re swimming while staring out at olive groves and distant hills. Late afternoon is magic hour there – the light goes golden and you can hear church bells from the village drifting across the valley. The restaurant serves what I’d call elevated comfort food – local ingredients, simple preparations, but everything tastes like it actually came from somewhere specific rather than a generic supply chain.
Look, if you’re hunting for nightlife or shopping, this isn’t your place. But if you want to remember why you fell in love with the idea of Tuscany in the first place, Villa Le Querciolaie delivers exactly that. It’s the kind of spot where you find yourself extending your stay just because leaving feels wrong.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: The room was a little cold.
What could be improved: no air con in the room, but when asked we have got a small fan.
few items missing from the bathroom as a glass to drink and to put the toothbrush in, no holder for toilet paper.
in the closet, no decent hangers ( there were 4 of them, all different, in bad shape and not enough in numbers).
there is a small fridge to keep the water cool but only one bottle of 50 cl offered at the arrival and not replaced in the evening or the day after.
breakfast quite poor in terms of ingredients: mainly cookies and cakes, two kind of cheeses, some ham, white pizza and white Tuscan bread, ricotta, natural yogurt. barely no fruit ( some melon slices on the first day ) and 3 apricots the day after, supermarket huice, few boiled eggs and tomatoes.
no cereals, no variety of yogurt, no nuts, no fruit.
when asked, scrambled eggs were served.
being Italian myself, I believe a better quality breakfast rich of local food can be provided and appreciated!
What could be improved: nothing
What could be improved: It was super hot at night and a fan in the rooms would have been great, we were there a few nights there was a heatwave, but for the lac of air the main house was just stunnning. Some nights there was. a good breeze which kept us cool.
What could be improved: It could get a little hot at night but we were there during a heatwave
