The Hoxton, Florence
Florence, ItalyYou know what struck me first about The Hoxton Florence? It’s tucked away on Via delle Mantellate in this quiet pocket of San Marco that somehow feels both central and secret at the same time. I mean, you’re literally a five-minute walk from the Duomo, but the street itself has this residential calm that’s honestly hard to find in Florence these days. The building used to be a convent – and you can still feel that history in the thick stone walls and the way sound just… disappears once you step inside. The lobby has this effortless cool factor without trying too hard, if that makes sense. Think exposed brick, comfortable leather chairs you actually want to sit in, and staff who seem genuinely happy to chat about where to find the best lampredotto (it’s at Il Trippaio di San Frediano, by the way).
The rooms themselves are what really won me over though. They’ve got this whole aesthetic going that’s sort of industrial-chic meets Tuscan warmth – copper fixtures, these amazing floor-to-ceiling windows, and beds that are honestly some of the most comfortable I’ve slept in. The bathrooms are compact but clever, with rainfall showers that actually have decent water pressure (you’d be surprised how often that’s an issue in historic Florence buildings). What I really appreciated was the attention to details that matter when you’re actually living somewhere for a few days – proper blackout curtains, outlets where you need them, and a minibar that doesn’t cost more than dinner. The breakfast situation is solid too, though it gets pretty busy around 9am, so either go early or embrace the chaos.
Here’s the thing about the location that most people don’t realize – you’re close enough to walk everywhere that matters, but far enough from the tourist madness around Ponte Vecchio that you can actually think straight. The Mercato Centrale is about a ten-minute stroll, and you’re perfectly positioned to duck into the Oltrarno district when you want to see how locals actually live. Plus, being in San Marco means you’re near some of the city’s best-kept secrets, like the library at San Lorenzo where students actually study instead of taking selfies. The area gets wonderfully quiet at night, which is a blessing if you’re trying to recover from too much Chianti. Honestly, at this price point in Florence, you’re usually stuck choosing between character and comfort, but The Hoxton somehow manages both. It’s the kind of place where you’ll find yourself lingering in the lobby with a coffee, planning your next day while watching the mix of business travelers and weekend wanderers figure out their own Florence adventures.
