Terra Antica – Resort, Winery & SPA
You know what struck me first about Terra Antica? The smell of fermenting grapes mixed with lavender as soon as I stepped out of the car. It’s not something you’d expect from a typical hotel, but then again, this place is tucked right into a working vineyard about ten minutes outside Montepulciano’s historic center. The property feels like someone’s elegant countryside estate that just happens to rent rooms – which, honestly, makes perfect sense once you realize it started as a 16th-century farmhouse. The drive up Via Sanguineto is narrow (I mean, really narrow if you’re in a rental car), but the payoff is worth those few nerve-wracking moments when you meet another vehicle coming down.
What makes Terra Antica actually special isn’t just the wine angle, though that’s pretty fantastic. They’ve got this small-batch winery operation where you can literally watch the process through glass windows, and the staff – many of whom have been there for years – know their stuff without being pretentious about it. The spa surprised me too; it’s built into what used to be the old cellars, so you’re getting your massage in these gorgeous stone-walled rooms that stay naturally cool even in August. The pool area overlooks the Val di Chiana, and honestly, the sunset views from there are the kind that make you forget to check your phone for hours. Room-wise, they’ve done this brilliant job of keeping the rustic charm (exposed beams, terracotta floors) while making everything feel modern and comfortable. The bathrooms are particularly well done – good water pressure, which you can’t always count on in converted historic buildings.
Here’s the thing about staying here: you’re close enough to walk into Montepulciano proper (about 15 minutes if you take the shortcut through the olive groves), but far enough out that you escape the summer crowds that pack the main piazzas. The hotel runs a little shuttle service too, which is clutch if you’ve been wine tasting and don’t want to navigate those medieval streets. Breakfast is served on this covered terrace that catches the morning light perfectly, and they source most ingredients from local farms – the ricotta alone will ruin you for the supermarket stuff forever. I’d recommend booking directly with them if possible; they sometimes throw in wine tastings or spa credits that the booking sites don’t mention. Fair warning though: if you’re looking for a buzzy, social hotel scene, this isn’t it. Terra Antica is more about unwinding completely, maybe reading a book by the pool, taking long walks through the vineyards. It’s the kind of place where doing absolutely nothing feels like exactly the right thing to do.

We arrived in time for barbeque night and really enjoyed it.
Enjoyed the wine tasting there too.
The pool was chilly and delightful in the hot sunshine.
Breakfast we were looked after by a wonderful young lady who made each morning have a good start with delightful fresh food and choice aplenty.
You do need a car to stay here if you wish to explore the area but for us, we needed rest and relaxation and it gave us that 100%
Rooms are amazing
