LunArt
You know what struck me first about LunArt? The name actually makes sense once you’re there – it’s tucked into this narrow vicolo (that’s what Florentines call their little side streets) and the whole place has this artsy, almost bohemian vibe that feels totally authentic. I mean, you’re literally on Vicolo del Canneto, which sounds way more romantic than it probably should, but honestly, these old medieval streets have that effect on you.
The location is pretty genius if you ask me. Most tourists get stuck in the chaos around the Duomo or over by the Ponte Vecchio, but this little corner near Santa Maria Novella – well, you’re close enough to everything that matters without being in the thick of the tourist madness. I could walk to the main train station in maybe eight minutes, which was clutch when I had to catch that early train to Rome, and the whole Santo Spirito area (which is where the actual locals hang out) is just across the river. There’s this fantastic little osteria called Il Santo Bevitore about a ten-minute walk away – absolutely worth it for dinner, by the way.
The hotel itself has that boutique feel without trying too hard, if that makes sense. It’s got those 4-star touches you’d expect, but there’s something refreshingly unpretentious about it. The rooms aren’t huge – I mean, this is a 14th-century building, so you’re not getting some sprawling American hotel suite – but they’re thoughtfully designed with these gorgeous original details mixed in with modern comfort. My room had these amazing exposed beams and the bathroom was surprisingly spacious for Florence standards. The 7.9 rating seems about right, honestly – it’s solid and charming without being perfect. I noticed the WiFi was a bit spotty in the lobby area, and the elevator is one of those tiny European ones that fits maybe two people and a suitcase if you’re lucky.
What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night. You’re off the main drags, so you don’t have those groups of study-abroad kids stumbling back from the bars at 2 AM (though you’ll hear the occasional Vespa – it’s Italy, after all). The staff genuinely seemed to know the neighborhood well, not just the obvious tourist spots. The guy at the front desk gave me directions to this little market in Sant’Ambrogio that I never would have found otherwise, where I got the best pecorino I’ve ever tasted.
Look, Florence can be overwhelming with all the Renaissance overload and the crowds, but staying at LunArt felt like I had this quiet little base where I could actually breathe between all the museum visits and church-hopping. It’s the kind of place where you can grab a coffee at the bar around the corner and actually chat with locals instead of just posing for Instagram photos. If you’re looking for something with character in a neighborhood that still feels real, this works.
