Soggiorno Michelangelo
Florence, ItalySo I stayed at Soggiorno Michelangelo a few months back, and honestly? It’s one of those places that gets better the longer you’re there. The first thing that struck me walking up Via Fra Bartolomeo was how quiet it felt compared to the chaos around Santa Maria Novella – you know, that refreshing moment when you realize you can actually hear birds instead of just tour groups and traffic. The Campo di Marte area isn’t where most tourists end up, which is actually perfect if you want to experience Florence without constantly dodging selfie sticks.
The hotel itself has this understated elegance that feels very Florentine, if that makes sense. Not flashy or trying too hard, just well-thought-out spaces with good bones. My room had these gorgeous high ceilings (I mean, it’s Florence, so of course it did) and windows that actually opened wide – something I’ve learned not to take for granted in European hotels. The morning light streaming in was incredible, and you could see snippets of the city’s terracotta rooftops if you craned your neck just right. What really impressed me was the attention to details that matter: proper water pressure in the shower, blackout curtains that actually worked, and – this might sound weird – but the Wi-Fi was legitimately fast throughout the building.
The staff here gets it. They’re not hovering or overly formal, but they know their stuff. When I asked about getting to the Oltrarno district, the woman at the front desk didn’t just point me toward the tourist tram – she actually sketched out a walking route that took me through some gorgeous side streets I never would have found otherwise. Speaking of getting around, the tram stop is maybe a seven-minute walk away, and it’ll get you to the historic center in about fifteen minutes. But honestly, I ended up walking most places because the route along the Arno is just stunning, especially in the early evening when the light hits the water. The neighborhood has this lovely residential feel with actual grocery stores and cafés where you’ll hear more Italian than English – there’s this little pasticceria called Bar Centrale about two blocks away that does the most incredible cornetti in the mornings. Fair warning though: if you’re planning to stay here during peak season (July-August), book early because locals seem to know this place is special, and rooms go fast. It’s not the cheapest option in Florence, but for what you get – the location, the service, that perfect balance of comfort and authenticity – it’s worth every euro.
