Sasseta Alta
Poggioferro, ItalyYou know what struck me first about Sasseta Alta? The absolute quiet when you step out of your car. I mean, you’re already expecting peace and quiet in rural Tuscany, but this place – tucked away on a hillside about ten minutes from Scansano proper – it’s like someone hit the mute button on the world. The gravel driveway crunches under your feet as you walk up to what looks like a beautifully restored farmhouse, and honestly, that’s exactly what it is. The kind of place where your biggest decision is whether to have your morning coffee on the terrace overlooking the vineyards or in the little garden courtyard where the jasmine actually makes the air smell different.
The rooms are what you’d call authentically Tuscan without being kitschy about it – exposed beams that look like they’ve been there for centuries (because they probably have), terra cotta floors that stay cool even in summer, and these thick stone walls that keep everything naturally climate-controlled. I stayed there in late September, which is honestly perfect timing because the harvest season means the whole valley smells like fermenting grapes, and the weather’s still warm enough for the pool but not so hot that you’re melting by noon. The staff – there’s this woman at the front desk who knows every hiking trail within a 20-kilometer radius and will draw you little maps on hotel stationary – they’re the kind of people who clearly chose to work there because they love the place, not because it’s just a job.
What really sets Sasseta Alta apart though is how it sits in the landscape. You’re technically in Maremma, which means you’re getting this different side of Tuscany – less crowded than Chianti, more wild somehow. The hotel’s position on the hill means you can see all the way to the coast on clear days, and Monte Amiata looms in the distance like something out of a painting. Scansano itself is one of those medieval towns that tourists somehow haven’t completely discovered yet, probably because it’s not on the Florence-Siena-San Gimignano circuit. The local wine (Morellino di Scansano) is seriously underrated, and there’s this little osteria in town – Il Grottino – where the locals still outnumber the visitors most nights. The hotel’s restaurant sources a lot from their own garden, which sounds precious but actually just means your tomatoes taste like tomatoes and the herbs were probably picked that morning. Fair warning though: if you’re expecting nightlife or shopping, you’re in the wrong place. This is more “read a book by the pool and lose track of what day it is” territory. But for an 8.8 rating, it delivers exactly what it promises – a genuinely restorative experience in one of Italy’s most beautiful (and still relatively undiscovered) corners.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: Nulla, tutto bellissimo
We enjoyed both the buffet breakfast and dinner, especially the choice of fruit and vegetables.
The sea is a bit less than an hour's drive, nearby Scansano has a well-supplied Coop.
There are a lot of wineries around, we chose Fattoria Le Pupille which I can recommend.
If you're looking for a memorable place to stay in Tuscany, look no further, Sasseta Alta is your choice!
What could be improved: Maybe not the ideal place if you're afraid of dogs - we aren't :) and enjoyed Joy's company.
What could be improved: More of a point to note, the off road path to reach the hotel is longer than we expected (about 1.5km), you need to drive with care and have a suitable car.
