Santo Spirito Venti
You know what struck me first about Santo Spirito Venti? It’s tucked right into this genuinely Florentine neighborhood where you’ll actually hear more Italian than English on the street – which, honestly, is getting harder to find in Florence these days. The hotel sits on Via di Santo Spirito, and I mean literally steps from the Basilica di Santo Spirito (hence the name), but more importantly, you’re in the heart of the Oltrarno district where real Florentines still live and work. The morning sounds aren’t tour groups shuffling past, but rather the rhythmic hammering from the artisan workshops and the coffee machine at the corner bar where locals grab their espresso.
The place itself feels like someone took a traditional Florentine palazzo and gave it a really thoughtful modern update – not the sterile kind you see everywhere, but one that actually respects the bones of the building. The rooms have this warm, lived-in quality with original architectural details they didn’t try to hide or over-restore. I particularly loved how they handled the lighting; it’s soft and warm in the evenings, which honestly makes a huge difference after you’ve been walking on cobblestones all day. The beds are proper comfortable (Italian hotels can be hit or miss on this), and the bathrooms have that satisfying weight to the fixtures that suggests they invested in quality, not just appearance. One small thing that caught my attention – the windows actually seal properly, which you’ll appreciate since Via di Santo Spirito does get some scooter traffic, though nothing like the chaos closer to the Duomo.
What really sets this place apart is the neighborhood access it gives you. You’re a two-minute walk from Piazza Santo Spirito, where there’s this perfect little evening scene at the bars – locals, not tourists, sitting outside with their aperitivo. The morning market at Sant’Ambrogio is an easy stroll, and you can walk to the Ponte Vecchio in about eight minutes without fighting through the crowds around Piazza della Signoria. The staff genuinely knows the area too – they sent me to this tiny osteria on Via Sant’Agostino that I never would’ve found otherwise, and it ended up being one of my best meals in Florence. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward, and they have a small but well-chosen selection of local wines available if you want to decompress after traveling. It’s got that 8.4 rating for good reason – everything works like it should, the location gives you authentic Florence without sacrificing convenience, and honestly, you’ll feel more like you’re staying in the city rather than just visiting it.
