Room Mate Luca, Florence
Florence, ItalyYou know what? I’ve stayed at a lot of hotels in Florence over the years, and Room Mate Luca is one of those places that just gets it right. It’s tucked away on Via XXVII Aprile – honestly, most tourists walk right past this street without realizing they’re missing something special. The location is actually perfect if you know Florence at all. You’re literally a three-minute walk from Santa Maria Novella station, which sounds touristy but hear me out – it means you can easily day-trip to other cities, plus there’s this fantastic little morning market that sets up nearby where locals actually shop. The hotel itself feels like someone took a classic Florentine palazzo and gave it this really thoughtful modern makeover without losing its soul.
What really impressed me was how they handle the details. The lobby has this warm, lived-in feeling – not sterile like so many boutique places try to be. The staff actually remembers your name (I mean, after the first day), and they’ll steer you toward the good gelato place on Via Nazionale instead of the tourist trap near the Duomo. The rooms are honestly what you’d hope for in a 4-star – clean lines, comfortable beds, and those little touches that matter when you’re tired from walking cobblestones all day. The bathrooms are particularly well done, with proper water pressure and lighting that doesn’t make you look like you’ve been hit by a bus. I stayed during August, which is brutal in Florence, and the air conditioning actually worked without sounding like a jet engine. Small victories, right?
Here’s what I really appreciate about this place – it feels authentically Florentine without trying too hard. You’re not going to find Renaissance frescoes on every wall, but you will find yourself in a neighborhood where people actually live and work. There’s a fantastic osteria about two blocks down that I never would have discovered if I’d stayed in the touristy center. The walk to the major sights is totally manageable – maybe 10 minutes to the Duomo at a leisurely pace, and you’ll pass some of the best leather workshops in the city on the way. Parking is… well, it’s Florence, so forget about driving, but the location means you can walk everywhere that matters. The only minor thing I’d mention is that the street can get a bit lively on weekend evenings – nothing crazy, just the sounds of people enjoying themselves. Actually made me feel more connected to the city, if I’m being honest. With a 9 rating, this place clearly knows what it’s doing, and after spending time there, I totally get why people keep coming back.

What could be improved: Lift was out of order during our 4 night stay (ok for us but difficult if someone has poor mobility)
No ice available in the bar for the last 2 nights of our stay (but the friendly team did offer us a cold drink instead which was very kind)
