Residenza d’Epoca Palazzo Borghesi
Siena, ItalyYou know what? I’ve stayed at plenty of places in Siena, but Residenza d’Epoca Palazzo Borghesi actually made me feel like I was living in one of those Renaissance paintings you see everywhere in the city. The moment you walk through the entrance on Via S.Pietro – which is honestly one of those narrow medieval streets where you’ll definitely hear the echo of your footsteps – you realize this isn’t just another converted palazzo trying to cash in on the tourist rush.
The thing about this place is that it genuinely feels lived-in, if that makes sense. I mean, sure, it’s got all the restoration work you’d expect from a proper 4-star property, but they didn’t strip away the character. The walls still have that slightly uneven texture that comes from centuries of settling, and the ceilings… well, let’s just say they don’t make them like that anymore. What really struck me was how quiet it gets at night – and trust me, that’s saying something when you’re basically a three-minute walk from the Piazza del Campo. The thick stone walls do their job, though you’ll still catch the occasional late-night conversation drifting up from the street (which I actually found kind of charming). The staff here really knows their stuff too – not in that overly rehearsed concierge way, but more like they genuinely live in Siena and want you to experience it properly. They pointed me toward this little enoteca around the corner that I never would’ve found otherwise, and honestly, it ended up being one of my favorite discoveries.
Here’s the practical stuff that matters: parking is going to be your biggest headache, but that’s true anywhere in the centro storico. The hotel can help arrange something, though it’ll cost you – I’d honestly recommend just using the bus from the train station if you’re not driving. Check-in was smooth, no drama there, and the rooms have that perfect balance of period details and modern comfort. The bathrooms are actually spacious, which is sort of a miracle in these old buildings. One thing to keep in mind is that this place books up fast during Palio season (July and August), so if you’re planning around that, reserve early. But really, any time of year works here – I visited in October and watching the morning light hit the terracotta rooftops from my window was honestly better than any postcard. The 9.5 rating isn’t just inflated review scores; this place delivers on being both authentically Sienese and genuinely comfortable, which is harder to pull off than you’d think.
