Relais Del Lago
Capannori, ItalyLook, I’ve stayed at a lot of places around Tuscany, but Relais Del Lago actually caught me off guard in the best way possible. It’s tucked away on Via Della Chiesa Di Gragnano – you know, one of those narrow streets where you’re praying you don’t meet another car coming the other way – but once you find it, you’ll understand why locals have been keeping this spot relatively quiet. The name literally means “lake relay,” which makes perfect sense when you see the property sprawling along the water’s edge in Capannori.
What strikes you first isn’t the typical manicured hotel entrance you’d expect from a 4-star place. Instead, there’s this almost residential feel to it, like you’re staying at a well-connected friend’s countryside home that just happens to have professional service. The building itself has that weathered Tuscan charm – you know, the kind where the stones look like they’ve been soaking up sun for centuries, but everything inside feels thoughtfully updated. I mean, they’ve managed to keep the character without making you feel like you’re roughing it, which honestly is harder to pull off than it sounds. The lake views from most rooms are genuinely spectacular, especially in the early morning when the mist is still rolling off the water and you can hear the church bells from the nearby villages echoing across the valley.
The staff here actually knows the area – not just the touristy recommendations, but the real stuff. They pointed me toward this tiny osteria about ten minutes away that I never would’ve found otherwise, and they were spot-on about the best time to visit Lucca (early morning, before the tour buses arrive). The restaurant on-site is surprisingly solid too, focusing on regional ingredients rather than trying to be everything to everyone. I had this wild boar ragu that was clearly made by someone who knows their way around Tuscan cooking, not just hotel kitchen basics. Parking’s easy enough – there’s a proper lot, so you won’t be circling around those medieval streets looking for a spot. The rooms are well-appointed without being fussy, though I’d recommend asking for one facing the lake if you’re not an early riser, since the courtyard-facing ones can get a bit of morning bustle from the breakfast service. That 9.2 rating isn’t just inflated booking site nonsense – this place genuinely delivers on creating that authentic Italian experience without the pretension you sometimes get at countryside hotels. If you’re looking for a base to explore the Lucchese countryside that feels more like a discovery than a tourist trap, this is your spot.
