Poggio Martino
Cortona, ItalyYou know what? I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Tuscany over the years, but Poggio Martino really caught me off guard – in the best way possible. It’s tucked away on this quiet provincial road just outside Cignano, and honestly, the first time I drove there I thought my GPS was leading me astray. The Strada Provinciale delle Chianacce isn’t exactly a main thoroughfare, but that’s actually what makes this place so special. You’re literally surrounded by rolling hills and vineyards, with that classic Tuscan countryside stretching out in every direction. The drive itself is gorgeous, winding through olive groves and past those stone farmhouses that look like they haven’t changed in centuries.
The hotel itself feels like someone’s elegant country home that just happens to take guests – I mean that in the best way. It’s got that 4-star polish without being stuffy about it. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, with these lovely terracotta floors and wooden beams that give you that authentic Tuscan vibe without feeling like a theme park. What really impressed me was how quiet it gets at night – you’re far enough from any main roads that all you hear are crickets and maybe the occasional owl. The staff genuinely seems to care about the place too, which you can tell makes a difference. They know the area inside and out and actually give useful recommendations, not just the standard tourist spots.
The location is really something special if you want to explore this part of Tuscany properly. You’re about a 20-minute drive from some incredible hill towns that most tourists never see, and the whole Val d’Orcia area is right there. I spent one morning just walking the grounds with my coffee – they’ve got these beautiful gardens and terraces where you can sit and watch the sunrise over the valley. The restaurant (when it’s open) serves genuinely good local food, not the generic “international cuisine” you get at so many hotels. That 9.4 rating isn’t just inflated reviews – people really do love this place, and after spending a few days there, I totally get why. It’s the kind of spot where you actually relax instead of just checking off sightseeing boxes, if you know what I mean.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: Nothing
What could be improved: Noisy guests
What could be improved: The appartment we stayed in is really dated (cupboards don't close, bathroom is old, chairs are old and uncomfortable) and a bit cramped for two adults and a toddler. The wheather was really nice so thankfully we did not have to stay indoors much, but if we would have stayed here during autumn/winter it would def. be too uncomfortable, not well equipped and small. We did not know the second bedroom did not have a window so you need to keep the door open to get some fresh air. The matrasses were a bit too hard for our taste. It would be great if the property would invest in airconditioning, because sometimes it was 30 degrees celsius during the night.
What could be improved: Im my parent's opinion - lack of air conditioning
