Podere Brizio
You know what’s funny about finding great places in Tuscany? Sometimes the best ones are tucked away where you’d never think to look. Podere Brizio is one of those spots – it’s actually in this tiny hamlet called Tavernelle, about fifteen minutes outside Montalcino proper, and honestly, that’s part of what makes it so special. I mean, everyone’s fighting for rooms right in the town center, but here you get this authentic agriturismo experience with rolling vineyard views that’ll make you forget why you thought you needed to be walking distance from the fortress.
The property itself feels like someone’s sophisticated country cousin decided to open their doors to travelers. It’s got that rustic Tuscan thing down pat – think exposed beams and terracotta floors – but without feeling like you’re staying in a museum. The rooms are genuinely comfortable (I’m talking proper mattresses and rainfall showers), and the whole place has this lived-in elegance that you can’t fake. What really got me was how quiet it gets at night – like, properly quiet in a way that makes you realize how much noise you’re used to living with. You’ll hear maybe some crickets and that’s it. The staff actually lives locally and knows their stuff about the area, which is refreshing after dealing with so many places where the front desk can barely tell you where to get decent coffee.
Here’s the thing about staying out in Tavernelle – yes, you’ll want a car, but the drive into Montalcino is actually gorgeous, especially in the early morning when the light hits the cypress trees just right. Plus, you’re positioned perfectly for day trips to places like Pienza or Sant’Antimo (that abbey is maybe twenty minutes away and worth the detour). The property has its own parking, which trust me, you’ll appreciate after trying to navigate those medieval streets in town. I stayed in late September and the weather was perfect – warm days, cool nights, and the grape harvest was just finishing up, so there was this energy in the air. The breakfast spread is solid too, with local pastries and really good coffee, though they serve it until a civilized hour, not one of those rushed affairs that ends at 9 AM sharp. Look, with a 9.4 rating, you’re not taking a huge risk here, and honestly, places like this are getting harder to find as more of Tuscany gets touristy and generic. If you want to feel like you’re actually experiencing the region rather than just passing through it, this is your spot.

The rooms are really spacious and clean as were the other facilities I.e swimming pool.
We had dinner at the restaurant one evening and it was our favourite night, the food was delicious, Vito was a great host and we thoroughly enjoyed sitting underneath the stars hearing all the crickets and wildlife.
We will definitely be returning!
