Relais Villa Belvedere
You know what struck me first about Relais Villa Belvedere? The way it sits up on that hill in Caprilli – honestly, when you’re driving up from the valley floor, you start to wonder if your GPS is playing tricks on you. But then you see it, this gorgeous villa perched above the Valdarno with views that make you understand why the Tuscans have been fighting over this land for centuries. The check-in process is a bit quirky (you actually go to a different address on via Poggio al Burchio 4), but the staff there are genuinely helpful – not the rehearsed kind of helpful, but the “let me tell you about the best gelato in Incisa” kind.
The thing about this place is that it feels like staying at someone’s beautifully restored family estate rather than a hotel. I mean, sure, it’s got all the four-star touches you’d expect, but there’s something more personal about it. The rooms have this perfect balance of rustic Tuscan charm and actual comfort – thick walls that keep things blissfully quiet, which is saying something since Italian hotels can be hit or miss on noise levels. The beds are properly comfortable (not those rock-hard Italian mattresses you sometimes encounter), and the bathrooms have that satisfying weight to the fixtures that tells you someone cared about the details. What really gets me is the morning light streaming through those windows – you’re surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, with the Pratomagno mountains rising in the distance.
Location-wise, you’re about a 15-minute drive from the center of Incisa in Valdarno, which honestly works in your favor. The town has this authentic everyday Italian feel – there’s a great market on Thursdays, and the locals at Bar Centrale make a mean cappuccino without the tourist markup. Plus, you’re positioned perfectly for day trips: Florence is maybe 40 minutes by car, and you can easily explore the Chianti region without dealing with the crowds that descend on places like Greve. The parking situation is refreshingly stress-free too – something that’ll make sense once you’ve tried to park in any Tuscan hill town. I found myself actually looking forward to coming back each evening, partly because of that incredible terrace where you can watch the sunset paint the valley golden, and partly because the whole atmosphere just makes you slow down and remember why you came to Tuscany in the first place. It’s the kind of place where you find yourself planning your next visit before you’ve even checked out.
