Podere Borgaruccio
You know those places that surprise you? Podere Borgaruccio is one of them. I’ll be honest – when I first saw the address on Via Del Molino, I wasn’t sure what to expect. It’s tucked away in Peccioli, which honestly most people drive right past on their way to more famous Tuscan spots. But that’s exactly what makes this place special.
The property itself feels like someone’s well-loved family estate that they’ve graciously opened up to guests. We’re talking about a working agriturismo here, not some sterile hotel chain, so you’ll actually hear roosters in the morning (which I found charming, though light sleepers might want to pack earplugs). The building has that weathered stone look that you can’t fake – it’s genuinely old, genuinely Tuscan. What really got me was the attention to detail inside though. The rooms have this perfect balance of rustic charm and modern comfort. I mean, you get the exposed beams and terracotta floors you’re hoping for, but also reliable wifi and a bathroom that actually works properly.
The location is pretty brilliant once you figure it out. Peccioli sits on this hill overlooking the Tuscan countryside, and from Borgaruccio you can see for miles – especially at sunset when everything goes golden. It’s about a 20-minute drive to Volterra if you want to do the tourist thing, but honestly, I spent most of my time just wandering the property and the village. There’s this little osteria in town that the owners recommended – can’t remember the name, but it’s near the main piazza – where locals actually eat. The kind of place where they don’t have an English menu but somehow you end up with the best meal of your trip. Parking at the hotel is easy, by the way, which sounds boring but matters when you’re navigating narrow Italian streets with a rental car.
What really sets this place apart is how it feels lived-in rather than performed. The breakfast isn’t some massive buffet – it’s more like what a really good Italian cook would make for house guests. Fresh bread, local cheese, maybe some fruit from their own trees. The staff (I think some were family members?) know the area inside and out. They’ll tell you which hilltop towns are worth the drive and which ones are tourist traps. They suggested this amazing walk through the olive groves that I never would have found on my own.
The whole experience feels authentic in a way that’s getting harder to find. Sure, it’s not luxury in the marble-lobby sense, but it’s something better – it’s real. The kind of place where you find yourself staying an extra day because you’re not quite ready to leave. And with an 8.8 rating, clearly I’m not the only one who felt that way.

The staff went above and beyond to make our stay perfect!
it has a lovely little restaurant on site which produces lovely food and the staff were so friendly and couldn’t do enough for you except the gentleman that meets you on arrival. not really sure what his role is but he lacks customer service which is a shame as the other ladies are so lovely
