Palazzo Salviati by Varental
Look, I’ve stayed in my fair share of Florence hotels, and Palazzo Salviati hits that sweet spot where you feel like you’re actually living in the Renaissance without sacrificing modern comfort. The moment you walk through those heavy wooden doors on Via della Vigna Vecchia, you’re basically stepping into someone’s noble family palazzo – because that’s literally what it is. The lobby still has these incredible frescoed ceilings that make you crane your neck like a tourist, but honestly, I never got tired of looking up at them.
What really gets me about this place is the location – I mean, you’re practically neighbors with the Uffizi. When I say practically, I’m talking about a two-minute walk where you’ll pass maybe three other buildings, tops. You know that morning chaos when tour groups descend on the Uffizi around 9 AM? Well, you can actually watch it unfold from some of the upper floor windows while sipping your espresso. It’s like having front-row seats to the Florence show. The street itself is this narrow little thing that most cars can’t even navigate, which means it stays relatively quiet despite being dead center in the tourist zone. Though I’ll be honest – you will hear some foot traffic echoing off the stone walls, especially during peak season. It’s not disruptive, just… authentically Florentine, if that makes sense.
The rooms themselves strike this interesting balance between preserving the palazzo’s character and actually being comfortable to sleep in. My room had these gorgeous original tile floors – the kind that stay cool even in July heat – and bathroom fixtures that were clearly updated but didn’t look jarringly modern. The bed was solid (none of that European-rock-hard mattress stereotype), and the air conditioning actually worked, which honestly surprised me given how many historic buildings in Florence seem to treat AC as an afterthought. What I really appreciated was the little touches that showed someone was thinking about actual guest experience – decent water pressure, outlets where you need them, and blackout curtains that actually block out those early morning sun rays bouncing off the Arno. The staff genuinely seemed to know the neighborhood too, not just the standard tourist recommendations. When I asked about a good aperitivo spot that wasn’t overrun with Americans like me, they pointed me toward this tiny enoteca tucked behind Santa Croce that I never would have found otherwise. The 8.4 rating makes sense – it’s not trying to be the fanciest hotel in Florence, but it delivers on that promise of letting you live like a Florentine noble for a few days, just with better plumbing and WiFi.
