Palazzo dei Conti Residenza d’Epoca
Florence, ItalyYou know what hits you first when you walk into Palazzo dei Conti? The smell – and I mean that in the best way possible. It’s this mix of old stone, beeswax, and something faintly floral that just screams “authentic Italian palazzo.” I’ve stayed in plenty of converted historic buildings that feel like they’re trying too hard, but this place on Via dei Conti actually gets it right. The moment you step through those heavy wooden doors, you’re transported back a few centuries, but honestly, you won’t miss modern conveniences because they’ve managed to blend everything seamlessly.
The location is pretty much perfect if you want to feel like you’re living in Florence rather than just visiting it. You’re literally a three-minute walk from Santa Maria Novella station – which sounds touristy but actually means you can grab those amazing paninis from the little place right by the tracks for breakfast. More importantly, you’re tucked into this quiet side street that most tour groups never discover. I mean, Via dei Conti runs parallel to all the main action, so you can stumble back from dinner at 11 PM without fighting crowds, but you’re still close enough to hit Mercato Centrale in five minutes when you want that perfect morning coffee. The rooms themselves feel substantial – thick walls mean you won’t hear your neighbors, and those original frescoed ceilings (not in every room, but if you get lucky) are the kind of detail that makes you understand why people fall in love with Italy.
What really sets this place apart is how the staff treats you like you’re staying at a friend’s family palazzo rather than checking into a hotel. They’ll actually remember your name after day one, and more importantly, they know their neighborhood. Ask about restaurants and they won’t send you to the obvious tourist traps – they’ll point you toward that tiny osteria two blocks over where locals actually eat. The concierge (though that’s probably too formal a word for Marco, who seems to run the front desk) helped me figure out the best time to visit the Duomo without crowds, and he was spot-on. Fair warning though – this isn’t the kind of place with a gym or pool, but honestly, you’re in Florence. You’ll get your workout walking on cobblestones, and the Arno is right there if you need water views. With a 9.6 rating, it’s clearly doing something right, and after spending four nights there last spring, I can see why people keep coming back.

What could be improved: There’s nothing not to like.
What could be improved: Nothing
What could be improved: It is pricey. So there’s that. And a longer stay might be a tad challenging due to lack of drawer space and shelf space in the water closet. There was an issue with the air conditioning the first two nights; however the filters were cleaned and then it was perfect. I would not allow these things to deter me from staying again. The staff is amazing. I love the place. I am really going to miss it.
