Palazzo Capponi alle Rovinate
Florence, ItalyLook, I’ll be honest – when I first saw the address on Via dei Bardi, I thought “great, another tourist trap pretending to be authentic.” But then you walk up to number 36, press campanello 20, and suddenly you’re stepping into what feels like a Florentine family’s actual palazzo. And I mean that literally – the Palazzo Capponi alle Rovinate isn’t just playing dress-up with the renaissance theme, it’s the real deal. The stone floors have that worn-smooth feeling under your feet, the kind you only get from centuries of use, and the ceilings… well, let’s just say they don’t make them like that anymore. What really got me was how quiet it is once you’re inside. Via dei Bardi can get busy during the day (it’s one of those streets tourists use to avoid the crowds on Ponte Vecchio), but the palazzo’s thick walls just swallow all that noise.
The thing about staying here is that you’re actually living in the Oltrarno – not just visiting it. You know that morning ritual where you grab coffee at a local bar? There’s this tiny place just down the street where the barista will remember your order by day three. And honestly, that’s what makes this spot special. You’re a five-minute walk from the Pitti Palace, but you’re also stumbling distance from those little artisan workshops that most people never find. I spent an entire afternoon just wandering the narrow streets behind the hotel, discovering leather workers and goldsmiths who’ve been there for generations. The hotel staff – and I mean this in the best way – they’re not trying to sell you tours or restaurant recommendations every five minutes. They’ll point you toward the good stuff if you ask, but mostly they just let you be. Oh, and parking – since everyone asks about this in Florence – forget about it near the hotel. But there’s a decent garage about ten minutes away, and honestly, you won’t need a car anyway.
What I keep coming back to is how this place manages to feel both grand and livable. Sure, you’re sleeping in rooms with frescoed ceilings and antique furniture, but the Wi-Fi actually works, the shower has proper pressure, and the air conditioning doesn’t sound like a freight train. The 9.3 rating makes sense when you experience it – it’s not trying to be a slick modern hotel, and it’s not a dusty museum either. It’s just… comfortable elegance, I guess? Plus, and this might sound weird, but the building has this smell – not musty or anything – just that old stone and wood scent that makes you feel like you’re part of Florence’s actual history. If you’re the type who wants to stay somewhere that feels authentically Florentine rather than just convenient, this is your place. Just don’t expect a rooftop pool or a 24-hour gym – that’s not what this is about.

What could be improved: There are almost no windows at all in this unit, which is rather jarring if you're not expecting it. The bed fell apart a couple times (we were able to fix it) and the bathroom is super tiny.
What could be improved: There were no toiletries for the shower
The apartment was stunning. The bedrooms were huge, each with their own modern bathroom. Beautiful decor.
Super clean. Loved everything about this apartment
What could be improved: Nothing! It was perfect!
What could be improved: Nothing. Loved it.

What could be improved: I arrived and noted my wife was not arriving until night 2 and the staff member mentioned he will have to check with management that city tax is not paid for my wife for the first evening but the management advised that no my wife had to pay city tax for an evening she was not even in the city for. I found that a little petty and fact is legally she was not even in the city and eligible to pay tax for the evening.
