Mormoraia
San Gimignano, ItalyYou know what struck me first about Mormoraia? The absolute silence when you step out of your car. I mean, you’re only about ten minutes from San Gimignano’s main piazza, but honestly, it feels like you’ve found some secret corner of Tuscany that tour buses forgot about. The hotel sits in this gorgeous spot in Località Sant’Andrea – and if you’re not familiar with the area, that’s basically the sweet spot between the medieval towers and the rolling vineyard country that makes this region so ridiculously photogenic.
The building itself has that weathered stone thing going on that you can’t fake, and the staff actually knows your name by day two (which, let’s be honest, doesn’t happen at most places anymore). What really gets me is how they’ve managed to keep it feeling like a proper Tuscan farmhouse while still giving you all the modern stuff you actually need – the wifi works, the shower has decent pressure, and there’s proper air conditioning for those brutal July afternoons. The rooms have these thick walls that keep everything cool during the day and surprisingly quiet at night, though you’ll probably want to keep the windows open anyway because the evening air here is just… well, it’s perfect. I stayed in late September and you could hear church bells from the town drifting over in the evening, mixed with that cricket symphony that seems to follow you everywhere in rural Italy.
Here’s the thing about the location that took me a while to figure out – you’re close enough to walk into San Gimignano if you’re feeling ambitious (it’s about a 20-minute stroll through actual countryside), but far enough out that you miss all the day-tripper chaos. The parking situation is refreshingly simple too, which anyone who’s tried to navigate a rental car through medieval Italian streets will appreciate. They’ve got this little restaurant on-site that sources ingredients from farms you can literally see from your window, and the breakfast spread includes local honey that tastes like it came from hives hidden in the olive groves. The staff kept recommending this tiny enoteca in town called Da Gustavo – turns out they were absolutely right, and it’s the kind of local knowledge that makes you feel like you’re getting the real experience rather than the tourist version. With a 9.2 rating, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect, but after three nights there, I get it. It’s not trying to be flashy or impress you with marble lobbies – it just does everything right in this quietly confident way that makes you want to extend your stay.

What could be improved: I liked all
What could be improved: Nothing.
What could be improved: We stayed too few nights.
The wine and olive oil tasting was a lovely touch, and our cooking class with Alberto was a highlight—he made it fun, educational, and delicious!
What could be improved: I do want to be honest about a couple of things that didn’t sit well with me. The bike rental experience was disappointing. One of the bikes broke down just 30 minutes in, and despite being told they were older bikes, I was still charged the full 50 euros for a 5-hour rental and expected to cover the repair. I personally feel this situation could’ve been handled with more fairness or flexibility—perhaps a partial refund or at least waiving the repair cost.
(paid in total 150 euro for 2 bikes that i was only able to use for 30 min )
Also, I was a bit surprised that the jacuzzi wasn’t available unless we paid extra. For a place this beautiful and well-designed, it would have been nice if access to a warm jacuzzi was included in the experience.
Still, overall, the beauty of the place, the hospitality, and the food made this a memorable trip. With just a bit more attention to fairness around additional charges, it would be perfect.
The location was ideal for exploring the Tuscan countryside while still being close to the town. Every member of the staff was warm, welcoming, and incredibly hospitable, which made the experience even more special.
What could be improved: Nothing :-)
