Lucca in Azzurro Maison de Charme
Lucca, ItalyYou know what struck me first about Lucca in Azzurro? It’s tucked away on Viale Puccini – yeah, named after the composer who was actually born here – but it feels like stumbling onto someone’s elegant family home rather than checking into a hotel. I mean, the whole street has this residential charm that most visitors to Lucca never see because they’re too busy circling the famous walls or hunting for parking near San Michele.
The maison really lives up to its “charme” billing, honestly. There’s this beautiful courtyard garden where you can actually hear birds in the morning instead of Vespas revving up, which is sort of miraculous when you’re this close to the city center. The rooms have that perfect Italian balance – antique furniture that doesn’t feel like a museum, modern bathrooms (thank god), and these shuttered windows that actually keep the place cool during those brutal July afternoons. What I loved is how the staff knows the city inside and out. The woman at reception – I think her name was Giulia – didn’t just give me the typical tourist spiel about the duomo. She told me which osteria has the best tortelli lucchese and warned me that the walls get crowded with cyclists around 6 PM, so if I wanted photos without dodging bikes, go earlier.
The location is actually genius if you think about it. You’re about a ten-minute walk from Porta San Pietro, which means you can slip into the old city without dealing with the chaos near the main train station area. Plus – and this is key if you’re driving – they have an arrangement with a parking garage that doesn’t cost a fortune. In Lucca, that’s basically worth its weight in gold. The breakfast situation is solid too, nothing fancy but proper cappuccino and cornetti, plus they had local honey that was honestly better than anything I’ve had in Florence. There’s something about staying in a place where you can walk to the Guinigi Tower in the morning, spend the day wandering those narrow streets, then come back to a quiet garden for an aperitivo. It strikes that sweet spot between being in the thick of things and having somewhere peaceful to retreat. For a four-star place, it punches above its weight – probably because it feels more like staying with sophisticated friends than checking into a standard hotel.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: Nothing
What could be improved: Nothing
What could be improved: The buffet breakfast was rather simple, not so many options to choose from. Also it was a little cold in the room at night.
What could be improved: Fridge inside wardrobe was noisy at night
What could be improved: B&B was in-between shops so pictures suggest a bit more rural. No you are in the modern Lucca you see from the Walls of Lucca looking out. Also no Tea or Coffee in the room.
What could be improved: Overall, everything was fine. The bathroom and sleeping area were a bit small and we had to lay our suitcases out on the floor. The room could use a bench to put your suitcases on.
