Le Terrazze Del Chianti b&b Residenza d’Epoca e di Charme
San Donato in Poggio, ItalyYou know what struck me first about Le Terrazze Del Chianti? The name’s a mouthful, sure, but it actually tells you everything you need to know – this place is all about those terraces overlooking the Chianti hills, and honestly, they’re spectacular. Tucked away on Via del Giglio in San Donato in Poggio (which sounds way more intimidating than it is), this B&B sits in one of those perfectly preserved Tuscan villages that feels like someone hit pause on the 16th century. I mean, you’re technically in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, but San Donato is this tiny hamlet that most tourists completely miss – which is exactly why you want to stay here.
The building itself is what they call a “residenza d’epoca,” and you can feel the history in the thick stone walls and the way the floors creak just right under your feet. The terraces – and there are several – face west toward the Chianti Classico vineyards, so sunset here is basically mandatory viewing. I actually found myself timing my day around it, glass of local wine in hand (they’ll point you toward the good stuff). The rooms have that authentic Tuscan feel without being too precious about it – exposed beams, terracotta tiles, the works, but with proper modern bathrooms and decent WiFi. Parking’s straightforward, which anyone who’s driven these winding Tuscan roads will appreciate, and the check-in was refreshingly personal – no corporate hotel nonsense.
What really sets this place apart though is the location knowledge you get from the owners. They’ll tell you which trails lead to the best viewpoints (there’s one about ten minutes’ walk that hardly anyone knows about), and more importantly, they know the restaurant situation. San Donato is tiny – like, blink-and-you-miss-it tiny – so you’ll probably end up driving to nearby Tavarnelle or Barberino for dinner, but they’ll steer you away from the tourist traps. The 9.5 rating makes sense once you’re there; it’s that rare combination of authentic atmosphere and actually comfortable accommodation. Sure, it’s not the cheapest option in the area, but you’re paying for the privilege of staying somewhere that feels genuinely Tuscan rather than generically Italian. Plus, you’re positioned perfectly for day trips – Florence is about 45 minutes, Siena’s even closer, and you’re literally surrounded by wineries if that’s your thing. The only downside? Well, it’s pretty quiet here, especially off-season, so if you need lots of nightlife, this isn’t your spot. But if you want to wake up to church bells and vineyard views, with that particular golden light that makes Tuscany famous… honestly, I can’t think of a better base.

What could be improved: nothing
The breakfast was fantastic and Paolo even gave us some cake and croissants to take with us on our journey.
What could be improved: Nothing. Just a tip - we didn't have a car and it was a bit hard to go outside the town since public transport is not that great. But we managed fine with the help of Paolo and Valerie and the locals.
