Le Colombaie Country Resort
Ponsacco, ItalyYou know what really struck me about Le Colombaie Country Resort? It’s one of those places that actually lives up to its name – this isn’t some generic “country resort” thrown into a hotel chain’s portfolio. Tucked away on Via Donizetti in Ponsacco, it feels like someone converted a proper Tuscan estate and somehow managed to keep all the charm intact. The moment you pull up (and yes, parking is easy – none of that city hotel nonsense), you’re looking at this beautiful stone building that’s got that weathered elegance thing down perfectly. I mean, you can tell it’s been thoughtfully restored, but it doesn’t feel precious or overdone.
The location is honestly brilliant if you know anything about this part of Tuscany. Ponsacco isn’t on every tourist’s radar, which is exactly why it works so well. You’re about twenty minutes from Pisa – close enough that you can actually use the airport without wanting to cry, but far enough that you’re not dealing with cruise ship crowds every day. The staff here seems to get that most guests are using this as a base for day trips to places like Volterra or San Gimignano, and they’re genuinely helpful with directions and timing. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets in the evenings – you can actually hear the countryside settling down, which sounds cheesy but is surprisingly restorative after a day of sightseeing.
The rooms have that perfect balance of traditional Tuscan elements (exposed beams, terracotta tiles) without feeling like you’re sleeping in a museum. The beds are actually comfortable – I’m talking proper mattresses, not the firm-as-concrete situation you sometimes get in converted historic buildings. And honestly, the rating of 8.6 feels about right; it’s not trying to be ultra-luxurious, but everything works well and feels considered. The restaurant leans into local ingredients without being overly fussy about it, and the breakfast spread is solid – real prosciutto, good coffee, fresh pastries from somewhere nearby. If I had to nitpick, I’d say the WiFi can be a bit spotty in some rooms, but frankly, that might be a feature rather than a bug depending on what you’re looking for. The pool area is lovely in the warmer months, though it does get busy with families around Italian holiday times. Overall, it’s the kind of place that feels like a genuine discovery rather than just another booking – perfect for people who want to experience this part of Italy at a more relaxed pace.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: The shower space was very small and would get
The whole bathroom wet. We could not make the AC work
The swimming pool could be more animated with a bar or some service including towels
Cleaningness
Welcoming attitude
Amazing quality of breakfast
Heating system in the room (in December)
What could be improved: Nothing. It’s not close to anything, but we were aware and we had a car
What could be improved: Just missed using the pool as it is open seasonally.
What could be improved: The decor in the bedroom and en-suite is old and dated but the bed itself was lovely and comfortable and everything was clean.
What could be improved: There was only two small rolls of toilet paper for 5 adults, there was no staff on duty overnight so we had to wait until morning to get more toilet paper.
