La Pievina
Montepulciano, ItalyYou know what’s funny about La Pievina? I almost drove right past it the first time – tucked away on Via Di Totona, it doesn’t scream “look at me” from the street. But honestly, that’s part of what makes this place so special. It feels like you’ve discovered something the tour groups haven’t caught onto yet, even though it’s right there in Montepulciano.
The building itself has this weathered Tuscan charm that you can’t fake – I mean, these walls have stories. When I checked in (super smooth process, by the way), the staff actually knew the area well enough to steer me away from the tourist traps. They pointed me toward this little enoteca about a five-minute walk down the hill that I never would’ve found otherwise. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star in this part of Italy – clean, comfortable, with those thick stone walls that keep things cool even in August. There’s something about the way the morning light hits the windows that makes you want to linger over breakfast instead of rushing off to see the sights.
What really got me was how quiet it gets at night. Montepulciano can be pretty lively during the day, especially when the day-trippers roll in from Florence, but once evening settles in, Via Di Totona becomes this peaceful little pocket. I could actually hear the church bells from my room – not in an annoying way, more like a gentle reminder that you’re somewhere with centuries of history. The whole setup feels residential, like you’re staying in someone’s carefully restored family home rather than a hotel. Parking was easier than I expected too, which if you’ve driven through any hill town in Tuscany, you’ll appreciate.
The staff clearly takes pride in the place – that 9.7 rating isn’t just luck. They’re the kind of people who remember your name and actually care whether you find that perfect bottle of Vino Nobile to take home. I stayed three nights and honestly could’ve done a week. It’s close enough to explore the town properly (the main piazza is maybe a 7-minute walk), but far enough from the daytime crowds that you feel like you have your own little corner of Montepulciano. If you’re looking for something with character that doesn’t feel like every other hotel in Tuscany, this is it.
