Hotel Description

You know what caught me off guard about La Maison du Sage? The name makes it sound all French and fancy, but honestly, it’s this perfectly authentic Florentine gem tucked away on Via Magliabechi – and I mean really tucked away. I walked past it twice before realizing that unassuming entrance was actually where I needed to be. The Santa Croce neighborhood isn’t exactly quiet (especially during the day when tourists are hitting the basilica), but this little street feels almost residential, which is rare for central Florence.

The building itself has that weathered Tuscan charm – you can tell it’s been around for centuries, probably saw the Medici drama unfold. What I loved was how they’ve kept the original character without making you feel like you’re sleeping in a museum. The rooms have these gorgeous exposed beams and stone details, but the beds are actually comfortable (not always a given in historic Italian hotels, let me tell you). The staff genuinely knows the neighborhood – when I asked about avoiding the Uffizi crowds, the guy at reception didn’t just hand me a tourist map, he sketched out this whole route that takes you through the Oltrarno first, then circles back when the morning rush dies down around 11. That’s the kind of local knowledge you can’t Google.

I’ll be honest, parking is basically impossible around here unless you want to deal with the ZTL restrictions, but that’s Florence for you – and actually, you don’t need a car anyway. Sant’Ambrogio market is maybe a five-minute walk, and that’s where locals actually shop for food, not the touristy stalls near the Duomo. The hotel’s location means you’re close enough to everything important but far enough from the crowds that you can actually sleep at night. Well, mostly – there’s a bit of street noise in the mornings when the delivery trucks come through, but nothing dramatic. The 9.1 rating makes sense when you consider how hard it is to find a place in Florence that feels both authentic and comfortable. Most hotels here are either sterile modern boxes or charming-but-uncomfortable old buildings where nothing quite works right. La Maison du Sage somehow managed to split the difference – it’s got character and functioning WiFi, which is honestly more than half the battle in this city.

  • Connie from United States (9/10)

The location was close to all tourist attractions, but just far enough away so that it wasn't so crowded. The breakfast is amazing! Loved it! The housekeeping does an awesome job with the daily cleaning. It was so nice to come back to our room each day and find it spotless. The bed and pillows were very comfortable for a good nights rest. We also loved the decor in the hallways as well as the furniture in the bedrooms.
