La Locandiera B&B
Florence, ItalyYou know what? I’ve walked past La Locandiera on Via Della Scala probably a dozen times before I actually stayed there, and honestly, I was kicking myself for not booking it sooner. It’s tucked into this gorgeous palazzo that’s been converted into a B&B, and from the outside you’d think it’s just another beautiful Florentine building — but step inside and you realize the owners actually know what they’re doing here.
The location is one of those “locals know” spots that tourists stumble onto by accident. You’re literally a three-minute walk from Santa Maria Novella station, which sounds touristy but actually works in your favor because you can dump your bags and be exploring within minutes. More importantly, you’re right in the thick of the Oltrarno scene without the chaos of the Duomo area. I mean, Palazzo Strozzi is around the corner, there’s this little osteria called Il Latini that locals actually eat at (not just tourists), and you can cut through to the Arno along these narrow streets that most people never see. The morning routine here is something else — you’ll hear the espresso machine firing up around 7 AM, and there’s this subtle energy as the neighborhood wakes up that you just don’t get in the hotel zones.
What really got me was the attention to detail without all the fussy hotel nonsense. The rooms feel like staying in someone’s well-curated home — think original frescoed ceilings, but with modern bathrooms that actually work. The breakfast setup is refreshingly honest: proper Italian coffee, fresh cornetti from the bakery down the street, and none of that sad continental buffet situation. The staff (I think the owner’s family runs it?) actually remembered my name and had genuine recommendations, not the scripted tourist traps. They told me about this little wine bar, Procacci, that’s been serving the same truffle sandwiches since 1885 — and it was literally two blocks away. During my stay in September, the place was buzzing but never felt crowded, and I noticed they seem to attract a mix of travelers who’ve done their homework rather than the typical tour group crowd. The only minor thing I’d mention is that the street can get a bit lively on weekend nights — Florence isn’t exactly a quiet city anyway, but if you’re a super light sleeper, maybe request a room facing the courtyard. That said, the energy dies down after midnight, and honestly, it just feels like you’re part of the city rather than isolated from it.
