c-hotels Joy
Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Florence, and c-hotels Joy honestly surprised me in the best way. You know that feeling when you walk into a hotel and immediately think “okay, this is actually cool”? That’s what happened here. It’s tucked away on Via Degli Orti Oricellari – which sounds fancy but is basically this quiet residential street about a five-minute walk from Santa Maria Novella station. I mean, you’re close enough to hear the occasional train, but it’s not one of those places where you’re jolted awake at 6 AM.
The thing about this spot is that it sits right in that sweet spot between tourist central and actual Florence. You’ve got the Basilica di San Lorenzo literally around the corner, and the Mercato Centrale (where you’ll probably end up eating way too much lampredotto) is maybe a three-minute stroll. But here’s what I really loved – step out the front door and you’re on these tree-lined streets where actual Florentines live. There’s this little café called Bar Centrale about two blocks down where the barista actually remembered my order by day three, which never happens in the touristy areas.
The hotel itself has this modern-meets-historic vibe that works really well. The lobby’s got these clean lines and contemporary furniture, but you can tell they respected the original architecture – high ceilings, original stone details, that sort of thing. My room was honestly bigger than I expected for Florence (anyone who’s been here knows space is at a premium), and the bed was legitimately comfortable. Not “hotel comfortable” where you’re just being polite – actually good sleep. The bathroom had one of those rainfall showers that usually don’t work properly, but this one actually did. Small victories, right?
What really sold me was the breakfast situation. They set it up in this bright room with huge windows, and while it’s not some elaborate buffet, everything felt fresh and local. The coffee was strong enough to wake the dead, and they had this selection of pastries from a bakery nearby that were… well, let’s just say I had to start walking to the Duomo instead of taking the bus. Speaking of which – the Duomo’s about a fifteen-minute walk through some of the prettiest streets in the city. You’ll pass through Piazza San Lorenzo, maybe duck into the Medici Chapels if you’re feeling cultural.
The staff here actually seems to know Florence, not just the hotel. When I asked about restaurants, they didn’t just hand me a generic list – they asked what I was in the mood for and gave me specific recommendations. Ended up at this incredible little osteria called Il Latini that I never would have found on my own. That 9.1 rating makes total sense once you’ve stayed here – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in Florence, but everything they do, they do well. Plus, you’re paying for location and quality without the premium of being right on the Ponte Vecchio or whatever. If you want to feel like you’re staying in Florence rather than just visiting it, this is your spot.
