Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of places in Florence, and honestly? La Croce d’Oro Santa Croce Suite Apartments is one of those spots that just gets it right. It’s tucked away on Via Magliabechi – which, okay, sounds intimidating to pronounce but it’s actually this quiet little street that most tourists walk right past. You’re literally a two-minute stroll from the Basilica di Santa Croce (hence the name), but here’s the thing – you’re far enough from the main tourist chaos that you can actually sleep at night.

The suites themselves feel more like staying in a well-appointed Italian apartment than a typical hotel room, which I mean, that’s exactly what they are. The spaces are generous – not that cramped European hotel room situation where you’re practically sleeping on top of your suitcase. What really struck me was the attention to detail in the kitchenettes. They’re not just there for show; you can actually cook a proper meal if you want to hit the Sant’Ambrogio market (about a five-minute walk) and play house for a bit. The staff genuinely knows the neighborhood too – they pointed me toward this little osteria on Via de’ Benci that I never would’ve found otherwise, and honestly, it ended up being one of my favorite meals in the city.

Here’s what nobody tells you about staying in Santa Croce: you’re positioned perfectly to avoid the Ponte Vecchio madness but still within easy walking distance of everything that matters. The Uffizi? Maybe a 12-minute walk through some of the prettiest streets in the city. But you know what I loved most? Coming back in the evening when the light hits those old buildings just right, and the whole neighborhood settles into this peaceful rhythm. The sound of conversations drifting from apartments above, the gentle hum of Vespas in the distance – it feels authentically Florentine in a way that staying near the Duomo just doesn’t. Check-in was smooth (they actually answered when I called about arriving late), and the Wi-Fi didn’t make me want to throw my laptop out the window, which honestly, is saying something for Florence. The only minor thing – and this is really nitpicking – is that the street can get a bit echoey early in the morning when the delivery trucks make their rounds, but we’re talking 7 AM, and if you’re the type who needs absolute silence, bring earplugs anyway because you’re in Italy.
