Hotel L’Orologio Firenze – WTB Hotels
You know what caught me off guard about Hotel L’Orologio? The moment I walked in, I actually felt like I was staying at someone’s incredibly stylish Italian relative’s place – if that relative happened to have impeccable taste and a thing for timepieces. The lobby has this warm, intimate vibe with vintage clocks everywhere (hence the name, obviously), but it’s not kitschy at all. It’s more like… well, imagine if a watch collector designed a boutique hotel and actually knew what they were doing.
The location is honestly pretty perfect if you’re the type who likes to walk everywhere. You’re literally on Piazza Santa Maria Novella, which means you can stumble out the front door and hit the basilica before your morning coffee kicks in. But here’s the thing most people don’t realize – this piazza is also where the SITA buses come in, so you’ve got easy access to Siena or San Gimignano if you want to do day trips. The train station is maybe a three-minute walk, which is clutch when you’re dragging luggage through cobblestone streets (been there, done that, never again). I mean, you’re still in the thick of Florence – the Duomo is maybe a ten-minute stroll through some gorgeous side streets – but you’re not dealing with the absolute chaos of being right in the centro storico.
The rooms themselves feel thoughtfully designed rather than cookie-cutter fancy. Mine had these beautiful hardwood floors and this sort of modern-meets-classic Italian thing going on that actually worked. The bathroom was surprisingly spacious for a European hotel, and honestly, the shower pressure was better than what I have at home. Small thing, but you know how it is when you’re walking around Florence all day. The staff – and this might sound minor but it’s not – they actually remember your name and preferences. The guy at the front desk started making my cappuccino exactly how I liked it by day three, which is the kind of attention you get at smaller places like this. The breakfast spread is solid too, with local pastries and proper Italian coffee, though it does get a bit crowded around 8:30 when everyone’s trying to fuel up before hitting the museums. Pro tip: go a little earlier or after 9:30 and you’ll have the terrace practically to yourself.
