Il Palazzetto
You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Il Palazzetto on Strada Del Lucherino – honestly, the name sounds fancier than the narrow street it sits on. But here’s the thing about Siena: sometimes the best places are tucked away where you’d never think to look. This little 4-star gem is actually perfectly positioned if you know the city at all. You’re technically outside the historic center, which means you can actually get a taxi or car right to the door (trust me, that’s huge in Siena), but it’s maybe a 10-minute walk to Piazza del Campo through some really lovely residential streets that most tourists never see.
The building itself has that understated Tuscan elegance thing going on – not trying too hard, just solid stone and terracotta tiles that have been there forever. Inside, it feels more like staying at a well-heeled friend’s place than a hotel. The rooms are spacious by Italian standards, and I mean actually spacious, not just “European spacious.” They’ve got this warm, lived-in feel with antique furniture that doesn’t look like it came from a hotel catalog. The bathrooms are properly modern though – good water pressure, which you can’t always count on in these old buildings. What really got me was how quiet it is at night. Even with the windows open (and you’ll want them open for the breeze), you barely hear any traffic. Just the occasional scooter putting along, maybe some late-night chatter from the neighborhood osteria down the street.
The staff here actually knows their stuff about Siena, which is refreshing. They steered me away from the tourist traps near the Duomo and toward this incredible little enoteca that I never would have found otherwise. Breakfast is served in this sun-drenched room that overlooks a small garden – nothing fancy, but the coffee is proper Italian strong and they do fresh pastries from a local bakery. The whole place has maybe 15 rooms, so you’re not fighting crowds in the lobby or waiting forever for elevators. It’s the kind of place where by day three, the front desk guy is asking about your plans and giving you insider tips about which contrada celebrations are worth checking out. With a 9.1 rating, I expected it to be good, but honestly, it exceeded that. The only small thing I’d mention is that if you’re planning to stay during Palio season (July and August), book way ahead – locals know about this place, and once the tourists discover it, those rooms go fast. But that’s sort of the point, isn’t it? Sometimes the best experiences are the ones that feel like you’re in on a secret.
