Hotel Residence Esplanade
Look, I’ve stayed at my share of hotels in Viareggio, and Hotel Residence Esplanade actually gets it right in ways that surprised me. The location on Piazza Puccini is honestly perfect – you’re literally a two-minute walk from the beach, but more importantly, you’re right in the heart of where locals actually hang out. That piazza comes alive in the evenings when families bring their kids out to play and the older guys start their never-ending card games at the café tables.
The hotel itself has this sort of understated elegance that I really appreciated. It’s not trying to be some flashy resort – instead, it feels like a well-run Italian family operation that happens to have 4-star amenities. The lobby has these beautiful marble floors that stay cool even in August (trust me, this matters), and the staff… well, they actually remember your name after the first day. I mean, the front desk guy Marco knew I liked my espresso extra strong by day three. The rooms are spacious – and I’m talking properly spacious, not “spacious for Europe” – with balconies that overlook either the piazza or catch glimpses of the sea if you’re lucky. The air conditioning works properly, which honestly isn’t always a given in Italian hotels, even good ones.
What really sets this place apart is how it sits in the neighborhood. You’re close enough to the main drag along the waterfront to hit the beach clubs and seafood restaurants, but far enough back that you’re not dealing with the tourist chaos. Via Regia is right there if you want to do some actual shopping (not just beach stuff), and the Thursday market is practically at your doorstep. The hotel has its own parking situation figured out too, which – if you’ve ever tried to park in Viareggio during summer – you’ll know is worth its weight in gold. Honestly, the whole experience feels more like staying at a really nice apartment in town rather than being stuck in some hotel bubble. The 8.5 rating makes sense once you’re there; it’s not perfect, but it nails the things that actually matter when you’re trying to experience a place rather than just pass through it.

Guest Reviews
The room was decent with a small balcony and two separated rooms.
, always there to help.
Good breakfast and many options, staff are welcome and friendly.
Nice beach club with chairs, umbrellas, swimming pool, toilets and showers, bar and restaurant (45€ per day).
a few steps from the beach and the main street with shops and restaurants.
Hotel staff very serviceminded!
Perfect that the hotel has an agreement with beach clubs and arranged space and payment for us.
The arrangement for street parking also worked well.
