Hotel Palazzo San Lorenzo & Spa
You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Hotel Palazzo San Lorenzo & Spa on Via Gracco Del Secco – honestly, the street name alone had me wondering if my GPS was playing tricks on me. But this place actually surprised me in the best way possible. It’s tucked into this quiet corner of Colle Val D’Elsa where you can still hear the church bells from the old town echoing off the medieval walls, but you’re far enough from the tourist crowds that you’ll actually get some sleep. The building itself has that restored Tuscan charm without feeling like they tried too hard – thick stone walls that keep things cool even in August, and these gorgeous arched windows that frame the rolling hills perfectly. I mean, you’re literally looking out at vineyards and olive groves from your room, which beats staring at another hotel across the street any day.
What really got me was how they’ve managed to blend the old-world feel with stuff that actually works. The spa – and I’m usually skeptical about hotel spas – is genuinely relaxing, not just some afterthought in the basement. They’ve got this thermal pool area that feels like a secret grotto, and the treatments use local ingredients (yes, including wine, because this is Tuscany after all). The staff seems to know their stuff too, which you can’t always count on. Parking is straightforward, thank god, because navigating these hilltop towns with a rental car can be a nightmare. Check-in was smooth, and they actually gave us useful recommendations for dinner spots that weren’t just the usual tourist traps – there’s this little osteria about ten minutes’ walk away that serves the best ribollita I’ve had outside of Florence.
Here’s the thing about Colle Val D’Elsa that most people don’t realize – it’s not just another pretty Tuscan town. It’s got this whole crystal-making history (seriously, they supply crystal to luxury brands worldwide), and the hotel sits right between the newer part of town and the medieval upper city. So you can walk to actual local cafes and shops without feeling like you’re in a museum, but then climb up to the old town for those Instagram-worthy sunset shots. The hotel picks up on this vibe perfectly – it feels authentic without being stuffy, comfortable without being generic. Sure, it’s not cheap, but honestly? For what you get – the location, the spa, rooms that actually have character, and that view – it’s worth it. Plus, you’re perfectly positioned for day trips to Siena (twenty minutes) or San Gimignano (even closer), but you’ll want to spend at least one evening just sitting on their terrace with a glass of local Chianti, watching the light change over the Val d’Elsa valley.
