Hotel Garibaldi Blu – WTB Hotels

You know what caught me off guard about Hotel Garibaldi Blu? I was expecting another cookie-cutter Florence hotel, but this place actually has some personality. It’s right there on Piazza Santa Maria Novella – I mean, literally facing the basilica – and when you step out in the morning, you’re watching locals grab their espresso at the bar across the square while tourists are still figuring out their maps. The location is honestly perfect if you want to feel like you’re in the heart of things without being trapped in the Via de’ Tornabuoni tourist madness.

The hotel itself feels like someone took a classic Florentine palazzo and gave it a modern makeover without losing its soul. The lobby has this cool blue-and-white color scheme (hence the “Blu,” I guess) that somehow works with the old stone details. My room was on the third floor facing the piazza, and I’ll be honest – it gets a bit noisy in the evenings when the square fills up, but honestly? I loved falling asleep to the sound of people enjoying themselves down below. The air conditioning actually works well, which is something you can’t take for granted in these historic buildings. The bathroom was surprisingly spacious for a European hotel, and they had this rainfall shower that made me want to stay in longer than I probably should have.

What really won me over was the staff – they genuinely seem to care about helping you navigate the city. The guy at the front desk (I think his name was Marco?) told me about this little osteria on Via del Sole that I never would have found otherwise, and it ended up being one of my best meals in Florence. The breakfast isn’t anything revolutionary, but it’s solid Italian fare, and you can eat it while watching the Santa Maria Novella come alive in the morning light. Plus, you’re a five-minute walk from the train station, which is clutch if you’re doing day trips to Siena or Pisa. I mean, you could literally roll out of bed and catch the 9 AM train to Cinque Terre if you wanted to. The 8.9 rating makes total sense to me – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in Florence, but it nails all the things that actually matter when you’re exploring a city like this.
