Hotel De La Ville
Florence, ItalyYou know that feeling when you stumble onto a hotel that’s perfectly positioned but somehow not overrun with tourists? That’s Hotel De La Ville for you. I mean, you’re literally on Piazza Antinori – which honestly, most people rush past on their way to the Duomo – but this little square is actually one of those sweet spots where locals grab their morning espresso before the city fully wakes up.
The building itself has this understated Florentine elegance that I really appreciate. It’s not trying too hard, if that makes sense. When you walk in, there’s this lovely old-world lobby with marble floors that echo just enough to remind you you’re somewhere special, but the staff? They’re genuinely helpful without being stuffy. Check-in was smooth – they actually remembered I’d mentioned wanting a quieter room when I booked, which… well, you don’t always get that attention to detail at four-star places. The rooms have that classic Italian hotel vibe with rich fabrics and solid furniture, though I’ll be honest, the bathrooms could use a refresh. Nothing deal-breaking, just showing their age a bit.
But here’s what really sold me on this place: the location is absolutely perfect for actually experiencing Florence rather than just hitting the tourist traps. You’re a three-minute walk from Santa Maria Novella station (huge plus if you’re day-tripping to Siena or Pisa), but more importantly, you’re right in the heart of the shopping district. Via de’ Tornabuoni is basically around the corner, and there’s this fantastic little enoteca – Procacci, I think it was called – just down the street that serves these incredible truffle sandwiches. The kind of spot you’d never find if you were staying out by the Oltrarno. Plus, you can walk to the Duomo in maybe eight minutes, but when you want to escape the crowds, you just duck back to your quiet little piazza. I spent several evenings just sitting at the café across the square, watching the locals do their thing while sipping wine that cost about half what you’d pay near the major attractions. That’s the real Florence right there.
