Hotel Boccaccio
Oltrarno, ItalyYou know what struck me first about Hotel Boccaccio? It’s actually tucked away on Via del Tiglio in this quiet corner of Calcinaia where you can hear the birds in the morning instead of traffic – which, honestly, is pretty rare for a 4-star place in Tuscany. I mean, most hotels this nice are right in the thick of things, but this one sits in what feels like a residential pocket where locals still walk their dogs and chat with neighbors. The building itself has that understated Italian elegance thing going on – not flashy, just… well-maintained and welcoming in a way that makes you feel like you’re staying somewhere special without trying too hard.
The staff here actually knows the area, which sounds obvious but trust me, it’s not always the case. When I asked about getting to Pisa (it’s maybe 20 minutes by car), the front desk guy didn’t just hand me a generic map – he told me about the back road that skips the main highway traffic and mentioned that Thursday mornings can be crazy because of the local market. Little things like that make a difference. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star – clean, comfortable beds, decent Wi-Fi that actually works – but there’s attention to detail that pushes it above average. The bathroom had this great shower pressure, and honestly, after a day of walking around Tuscan hill towns, that matters more than fancy marble. One thing I appreciated was how quiet it gets at night; the location means you’re not dealing with late-night street noise, just the occasional car passing by.
What really sets this place apart though is that it feels like it’s run by people who care about hospitality, not just efficiency. Check-in was smooth, but more importantly, they remembered my name the next morning and asked how I slept. The breakfast spread was solid – proper Italian coffee, fresh pastries, and they had local honey that was actually from somewhere nearby, not just generic hotel stuff. The 8.6 rating makes sense to me because while it’s not going to blow your mind with luxury, it gets all the fundamentals right and then adds those human touches that turn a good stay into one you’d recommend to friends. If you’re looking for a base to explore this part of Tuscany without the tourist circus of Florence or Siena, this spot works really well – close enough to day-trip anywhere but far enough out that you feel like you’re experiencing actual Italian life, not just the postcard version.

What could be improved: Nothing
What could be improved: Next to the hotel is night club and you can hear a little noise in the night in the weekend.
What could be improved: The location is by a busy main road in an unattractive part of town. The room smelt strongly of smoke and there was no alternative offered. The swimming pool is a big lido next door and is packed with young people on a sunny day. Its like a public pool. We were asked by the hotel to pay 3eu for each pool towel !!! (we refused). Breakfast was in a nearby cafe and was pastry and coffee. This is not a four star hotel but it cost about 200eu !!
What could be improved: The way its decorated
What could be improved: Not enough breakfast options.
What could be improved: No iron in the room . hotel very remote . No taxis available on request.
room very outdated with poor air conditioning.
pool was dirty.
What could be improved: It is a 4star hotel. They told it has a pool. We opted for a room And breakfast. The hotel had not its restaurant and they gave us vouchers to go to a street cafe shop to eat our breakfast(it was inside the site but with public access.
There were some croissants and sandwiches, not diary produces or eggs for breakfast.
The pool was hotels pool but with public access and selling the tickets. We were first in the pool but sun beds almost were reserved. A member of staff found a free sun bed in the area that was not our favour. It was our first time 4 star hotel with street restaurant and public pool.
What could be improved: Pool working hours 10-19:00
