Hotel Boccaccio
Oltrarno, ItalyFirst Impressions
Hotel Boccaccio sits quietly on Via del Tiglio in Calcinaia, and honestly, you might drive right past it if you’re not paying attention. It’s not trying to impress anyone with flashy signage or grand entrances — this place has a refreshingly understated approach that I actually found quite charming. The building itself feels authentically Italian, tucked into this small Tuscan town that most tourists never even hear about. You know what struck me most? The immediate sense that this isn’t some cookie-cutter hotel chain, but rather a place where someone clearly cares about the details.
Location & Local Charm
Calcinaia isn’t exactly a household name, but that’s precisely what makes staying here interesting. You’re positioned perfectly between Pisa (about 20 minutes away) and the heart of Tuscany, which means you can actually explore without fighting crowds of tour buses. The locals at the nearby cafes still do double-takes when they see tourists — it’s that kind of authentic small-town atmosphere. Recent guests have been rating the location highly, and I can see why. There’s something refreshing about having free parking (which, let me tell you, is gold in this part of Italy) and being able to walk to genuine neighborhood spots rather than tourist traps.
The Room Experience
The rooms at Hotel Boccaccio won’t win any design awards, but they’re comfortable in that no-nonsense Italian way. Everything works as it should — the shower has proper pressure, the bed is actually supportive, and there’s enough space to spread out your things without feeling cramped. I mean, you’re not here to spend all day in your room anyway, right? The windows open wide (a simple pleasure that’s becoming rare), and you can hear the gentle sounds of daily life in Calcinaia drifting up from the street below.
Morning Fuel
Breakfast here keeps things simple with Italian classics, which honestly beats those elaborate buffets that somehow manage to make everything taste like cardboard. They also offer breakfast to go, which turned out to be surprisingly handy when I wanted to catch an early train to Florence. The coffee is proper Italian coffee — strong enough to wake the dead and served in cups that would be considered thimbles anywhere else. It’s the kind of straightforward morning routine that sets you up nicely for whatever Tuscan adventure you’ve got planned.
Why Guests Love It
Couples seem to have figured out something special about this place — they consistently rate it highly for romantic getaways, and I think I know why. There’s an intimacy to staying somewhere that feels more like a well-kept local secret than a tourist destination. The 8.6 guest rating reflects what you actually experience: solid comfort, genuine hospitality, and that increasingly rare feeling of discovering somewhere authentic. Hotel Boccaccio works because it doesn’t try too hard — it simply delivers what you need in a setting that feels genuinely Italian rather than performed for visitors.
Hotels in Tuscany crown hilltowns, olive groves, and Renaissance palazzi perfumed with rosemary.

Guest Reviews
What could be improved: Nothing
What could be improved: Next to the hotel is night club and you can hear a little noise in the night in the weekend.
What could be improved: The location is by a busy main road in an unattractive part of town. The room smelt strongly of smoke and there was no alternative offered. The swimming pool is a big lido next door and is packed with young people on a sunny day. Its like a public pool. We were asked by the hotel to pay 3eu for each pool towel !!! (we refused). Breakfast was in a nearby cafe and was pastry and coffee. This is not a four star hotel but it cost about 200eu !!
What could be improved: The way its decorated
What could be improved: Not enough breakfast options.
What could be improved: No iron in the room . hotel very remote . No taxis available on request.
room very outdated with poor air conditioning.
pool was dirty.
What could be improved: It is a 4star hotel. They told it has a pool. We opted for a room And breakfast. The hotel had not its restaurant and they gave us vouchers to go to a street cafe shop to eat our breakfast(it was inside the site but with public access.
There were some croissants and sandwiches, not diary produces or eggs for breakfast.
The pool was hotels pool but with public access and selling the tickets. We were first in the pool but sun beds almost were reserved. A member of staff found a free sun bed in the area that was not our favour. It was our first time 4 star hotel with street restaurant and public pool.
What could be improved: Pool working hours 10-19:00
