Grand Hotel Impero – Wellness & Exclusive SPA
You know what struck me first about Grand Hotel Impero? It’s not trying too hard to be fancy – which honestly makes it feel more luxurious than those places that shout about their grandeur. Right on Via Roma 7, you’re basically in the heart of Castel del Piano, and I mean literally a two-minute walk from the main piazza where locals grab their morning cappuccino at Bar Centrale. The building itself has that solid, understated elegance that screams “I’ve been here forever and I’m not going anywhere” – sort of like a well-dressed Italian gentleman who doesn’t need to flash his watch to prove he’s got class.
But here’s the thing that actually sets this place apart: the wellness center and spa aren’t just tacked on as an afterthought. They’ve clearly put some serious thought into this – the treatment rooms have these massive windows that look out onto the Monte Amiata foothills, and during my massage (which, honestly, was worth the trip alone), I could hear absolutely nothing but birds and the distant sound of church bells from San Niccolò. The staff knows their stuff too, not just going through the motions but actually asking about what you need and adjusting accordingly. I stayed in early October when the summer crowds had mostly cleared out, and the whole wellness area felt like my personal retreat. The indoor pool stays warm year-round, which is perfect because even in shoulder season, those Tuscan evenings can get surprisingly crisp once the sun goes down.
What really won me over, though, was how they handle the little things that matter when you’re actually living somewhere for a few days. The rooms – and I had one facing the courtyard, which I’d definitely request again – are spacious enough that you’re not constantly bumping into your luggage, and the air conditioning actually works (not always a given in historic Italian hotels, trust me). Parking is right there, which saves you from circling medieval streets in a rental car, and the breakfast spread includes local pecorino and honey from nearby producers, not just the standard hotel fare. The concierge, Marco, grew up in the area and gave me directions to this incredible little enoteca in nearby Arcidosso that I never would have found otherwise. Sure, the Wi-Fi can be a bit spotty in the lobby during busy periods, but honestly, that might be a blessing in disguise when you’re surrounded by this kind of scenery. With an 8.9 rating, it’s clearly not just me who thinks they’ve got something special going on here – it’s that rare combination of professional service and genuine local character that makes you want to extend your stay.

We didn't use spa or other wellness structure, but given their attention to details and the cleanliness, I would definitely try next time we visit.
